  • Pop-up site next to the River Esk in the Upper Eskdale valley
  • Access to hill walking and wild swimming spots in the Lake District
  • Five minutes’ drive to West Lakes Adventure for organised activities
Park up at a hill farm home to purebred Herdwick sheep, set right alongside the clear-water pools of the River Esk, during a stay at Dalegarth Campsite in Cumbria. This spacious park has lots of room for spreading out to soak up the Upper Eskdale valley views and a food tent serving up bacon butties and hot tea until late morning. During the rest of the day, handmade stone-baked pizzas and hand-fried fish ‘n’ chips are available to order. This sort of sustenance is definitely needed after days strolling in the surrounds – Eskdale has some of the Lake District’s most spectacular scenery, so walking boots are very much required when meandering around the mighty waterfalls and hills. The site’s owners also reckon some of the national park’s best wild swimming spots are close by, including the well-known Trough Bridge a few minutes’ walk away. Jumping in the water from here not high-octane enough for the thrill-seeking types you’re travelling with? Take adrenaline-seekers to West Lakes Adventure up the valley (five minutes) for activities like kayaking, canyoning and climbing.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch (four person)

Liked: Walks from the campsite were great, especially along the Esk and up to Stanley Force waterfall. The owners are very friendly and good at sorting out any queries you have. Nice basic facilities that are good value for money too.

Disliked: We arrived on a Wednesday which was good as the site wasn’t crowded however, understandably, the food van wasn’t open due to this. This meant we had to eat at at the local pubs and train station cafe for breakfast and dinners until the van opened on Friday as more people moved in. Not so much a complaint as this food and drinks were very nice but just a more expensive addition to be holiday that we weren’t expecting.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch (four person)

Liked: Lovely campsite, with beautiful views of the surrounding area with amazing walks on your doorstep. The facilities was in good condition, the showers were lovely and hot with good pressure. The washing up facilities was good. The toilets was always clean with plenty of toilet roll. We didn’t use the van as we cooked on the fire most nights, but it’s a good idea to have. However, it is only open at peak busy periods.

Disliked: Only minor dislike was the sink is pretty low and starts to ache your back when cleaning loads of pots and pans.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (two person)

Liked: Nice location, beautiful walks around the campsite, access to river, portashowers were quiet good but very dark in the evening as there is no light inside it.

Disliked: Portaloos - some reviewers said they were clean and smelt nice, but to us the smell was not nice, they were a bit messy with toilet paper on the floor, some small litter hidden in the corners coz there is no bins inside it. Also not being able to wash your hands after using the loo is a bit 🥴(although there is a hand sanitiser, not the same thing). Secondly, there is no socket in the shower and anywhere near it. I’ve stayed at many campsite, first time I see this. I had to wash my hair one evening, it was really windy and bit cold that evening, had to sit with wet hair and wait for it to dry itself. Result - sore throat next morning.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The host was so welcoming and incredibly friendly on arrival. The surprising addition of a food truck and it’s offering of delicious pizzas on an evening and a warm cup of tea on a morning was brilliant. The showers were rustic and charming but hot, powerful and clean - perfect! And the location was brilliant, so wonderfully remote in the beautiful lakes countryside but also within walking distance a great selection of pubs. Thank you for a lovely stay.

On site food van does great wood fired pizzas. Really well run site. Would definitely go back!

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: Site is very pretty. Next to a bit of river where you can swim. Ideally situated for climbing and walking.

Disliked: Disgusting portaloos. Showers covered with old chewing gum and not cleaned once in the week we were there.

From the manager: Dear Anonymous Sorry you felt this way about our facilities! They are rustic showers but I can assure you all our facilities are cleaned daily, the loos are serviced 3 times a week they can look a little muddy on the floor when it’s wet but I can assure you they are clean. ‘Covered in chewing gum’ is a ridiculous comment. There was 2 pieces some scruff had stuck on the side that was removed. We are onsite 24/7 why did you not come and speak to me when you were here to point out any issues and so I could rectify them?
