Prospect House Farm Campsite: Grass pitches

General

  • Family-friendly rural site 10 minutes’ drive from Scarborough
  • A 15-minute drive to Dalby Forest; half an hour to Filey Brigg
  • Part of a 138-acre farm with roe deer and other wildlife on site

For those who can’t decide between coast and countryside, Prospect House Farm Campsite might be a very sensible solution. This small, family-friendly site is set among the green North Yorkshire hills and yet it's only a 10-minute drive from Scarborough’s beaches.

Pitches here are in a field that's part of a 138-acre livestock farm, and they're all set up to be mighty peaceful. The pitching field is a car-free zone and your neighbours in the next-door fields are dairy and longhorn cattle. It's a popular spot for wildlife too – you might spot roe deer, foxes and badgers as you stroll through the meadows or head out on stone-walled bridleways.

Campfires are permitted on site here, so set off for the village of Scalby (five minutes' drive) to pick up provisions from the store (handy to note the village also has a couple of pubs if you'd rather settle in for a cosy evening…) Back at base, amenities include a washing-up area, recycling points and a bathroom block with showers.

Days out? Perhaps a hike through Wykeham Forest up to Raptor Viewpoint for the sight of buzzards, ospreys and kestrels flying overhead, or an outing to Scarborough, where you can relax with fish and chips on the beach while the kids dip their toes in the sea or jump between rockpools. And if you’ve always wanted to have a go at surfing or paddleboarding, this is the place for you, provided you can brave the chilly North Sea waters (though surf schools have wetsuits for hire).

Please note

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

This is a quiet site: no music is allowed.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

This was my first camping trip on my own. I couldn’t have picked a better campsite for this. In beautiful, proper countryside. Lovely walks without moving from the site! Great shower and toilet block, out in the open. Very clean. No loud music noise , so peaceful and relaxing. Pitches not on top of one another so felt private. Ideally situated for short trip to Scarborough and cheap boat trips. Will be back because I never saw the dolphins and whales this trip, but they breed here. Saw a gannet on boat trip. Exciting.

If I could give it 10 stars I would.

Be mindful there is no overnight parking on the campsite but you are allowed to drive up to drop off your items.

When we got to the field for camping, the pitches are all well spaced out with the grass cut shorter so its easy to identify. It prevents people from cramming right on top of each other and that allowed for a relaxing stay compared to other sites.

The toilets and showers were cleaned at least once a day and that made the difference. I am a stickler for dirty facilities and often this puts me off camping. But I had no problem using these. And with two toilets and two showers for the number of pitches available, it was ideal.

The sinks off to the side for washing up and hand washing were another bonus. And once again, clean enough that I did not have a problem using them.

There is a small fridge freezer to share which I didn't notice in any of the information for some reason, but it was a nice surprise! We only used it for meats though as I wanted to be mindful that it was a shared space and definitely a privilege to have a fridge on a camp site.

This campsite is certainly a hit for me and my family. Any visit to Scarborough will require a stay at Prospect House Farm campsite.

I can not thank the owners enough for the stay and at such an affordable price.

    Disliked:

Before we went, I am not going to lie, I was a bit let down that we couldn't have a fire due to the dry weather. But, I understood the risk and was just salty for a while.

Once arriving I remembered the note from the owner to not pet the dog. And for the love of God, DO NOT PET THE DOG! He's terrifying 🤣. But kept on a lead so as long as you don't get too close, you're alright. Just be mindful.

Absolutely loved the rural natural feel of this site. Going to sleep listening to owls, bat watching, vast starry skies and seeing deer. We liked the fact it was a small site and should be fairly peaceful. Also great that cars only allowed in the field for unpacking and packing the tent. Really helped you feel reconnected with nature. Beautiful setting with every aspect a lovely view. Facilities were very basic but clean and perfectly adequate. Good that there was a communal fridge/freezer. Joe was very friendly and helpful.

    Disliked:

Nothing about the site at all, but some guests were not as respectful of the 'quiet site' rule. Luckily we had a couple of peaceful nights before and after the bank holiday and most guests were very respectful. It did appear that some turned up with more people and cars than they should have which did impact on noise and toilet queues for a couple of nights.
Maybe some solar powered lights in the toilets would be an idea for nighttime.

Local attractions

Scarborough (10 minutes’ drive) has much more to offer than just sandy beaches and watersports (although both of those are excellent prospects). Other options include the medieval fortress, which has expansive coastal views from the grounds, or the chance to make a splash at Peasholm Water Chute – or an even bigger splash at Alpamare waterpark, where the kids can play in the wave pool and on the twisty slides while the adults treat themselves to a spa treatment.

There's no shortage of active pursuits at Dalby Forest (15 minutes), which has cycling and mountain-biking trails (including a World Cup MTB trail), a Go Ape Treetop Challenge and forest Segway rides. Younger children, meanwhile, can have fun searching for the Gruffalo sculptures or building a den.

If that doesn't give you your fill of wildlife, head to Filey Brigg (half an hour), where the dramatic headland stretches into the North Sea and provides a home to guillemots and cormorants, plus grey seals. If you strike it lucky, you might also witness the odd whale or dolphin swim past.

Must see

  • Dalby Forest Visitor Centre (14.2 kilometres)
