Grass pitches

General

  • Pop-up site on a 200-acre farm just outside the village of Lode
  • A 15-minute drive from Cambridge; half an hour from Ely
  • Spacious pitches on well-kept lush grass; lots of walks nearby

This spacious site may only be popping up for a few weeks but the folk that run Sunnyridge Camp 2020 have plenty of prior experience at welcoming guests on site.

The fields at this farm a mile from the village of Lode would usually be home to the musical stylings of the LodeStar Festival, but as that’s not happening in 2020 the enterprising team here have turned their attentions instead to creating a welcoming place to stay for travellers in search of a bit of fresh air in the Cambridgeshire countryside.

And you can certainly see the result of those attentions… just check out the pics of those fine grass areas you’ll pitch up on. Nope, that’s not an accidental pic of the courts at Wimbledon, it’s a shot of the fields that have been specially sown with lush green grass and then mown to a fine finish to ensure everything stays both comfy and smart-looking on the pitches.

Life on site is fairly simple: facilities have been kept to a bare minimum at this 200-acre estate, so there will be plenty of space to chill out and take in the views (all very much of the rural variety, with hardly any buildings in sight). Barbecues are permitted on site if you’d like to grill up some grub while you’re looking out into the open (you’ll just need to be careful to make sure they don’t damage that gorgeous green grass). Please note that toilets aren't provided as standard so you'll need to bring facilities along or book a pitch with bathroom.

As you’ll no doubt have guessed, there are plenty of places to get out for a walk or bike ride around here; perhaps less obvious is the fact that you can drive to Cambridge city centre in around 15 minutes to wander historic streets too.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Bookings must not be for more than 14 consecutive nights.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Minimum spacing of 2 metres between pitches.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

If you do not have any private toilet facilities you must book a toilet in advance.

Bins and waste water container provided. Lots of wildlife. Owls can be heard at night. Birds of prey and deer in adjacent fields.

From the manager...

Hi Alia,
Thank you for your review and describing the space here. Everyone needs to appreciate that the site was a pop up but may be developed in the future. This year the purpose was to support public after lockdown and NHS staff free pitches. The space comes at a huge cost which isn't passed on y any means and water was freely available and offered on arrival and each morning. Hopefully 2021 will bring more for campers. Thank you and glad you enjoyed the environment, Doug

Hi there, Your one night tour pitch review reply.
Toilets - Due to covid 19 an airborne virus in 2020 campers are requested to book a toilet for their own use on pitch, I felt this was a safer option and done at below cost price as every toilet is brought in deep cleaned and sealed ready for campers arrival.
*Primarily my reason for doing this campsite was to offer a staycation space after the first lockdown and a free pitch for NHS staff for every 6 campers who booked. I have worked for 2 months now at a loss to help others and feel this to be a harsh review but I'm not requesting it to be deleted.
The "space" in a field takes 4 days to mow with a 100HP tractor and a 4m wide mower every 10 days for most the year to keep it like a golf course costing me £XX,000.00's per year!
Water - was freely given to you as other campers in bought bottles of 5Lites so campers didn't congregate at single tap points and were sure of using potable water.
Showers - Agree there are no showers but I don't think 2020 is a good year to share facilities with covid 19, apart from covid see reviews of some other campsites with physically dirty toilets and showers!
Value for money - I don't know many campsites with pitches 25 x 35m (750m2) on green grass and 200 acres to enjoy space and nature.
Accomodation - was your own campervan!
Facilities - well as above, personally I wouldn't risk shared facilities this year!
Customer service - I was there in moments of your arrival, gave you an information pack of the campsite, map of the fields showing the huge 200 acres you could walk across, local shops list and a local pub doing deliveries on site of food. As mentioned, bottles of water, recycling and general waste bags and said phone me if your had any query or needed more water. I have no wish to invade people's time here and feel they are being checked upon.
Child friendly - there's 200 acres of fields to explore with wildlife, miles of path and cycleways, literally acres to play games, fly kites and for you as a parent to spend time with your child. It's not a theme park, no manmade play area but again with covid I wouldn't want my children sharing games facilities.
Sorry for the disappointment of your brief overnight stay as I make every effort here and at a huge cost to me. I do care for every person and truly sad you didn't enjoy the beautiful environment offered. Doug

Lovely setting with lots of space. The owner was really friendly, we felt very welcome. Perfect for a short stay. Downside is lack of toilets and showers. However if you have your own facilities or just staying one or two nights it's perfect. Great for some family time together away from it all.

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay here. Being a pop up campsite for this year to provide very large camping spaces for people it lacks full campsite facilities as I felt there is a covid 19 risk in having communal facilities being an airborne virus. So asking people to hire a deep cleaned toilet for their own use on pitch or have their own is my way of doing the best I can to keep people safe. Thanks for coming along and hope to see you again. :)

Scenery and setting was beautiful. Short 25 minute walk to the local pub. Owner very friendly and gave us a good amount of water. However all in plastic bottles so not the best environmentally.

    Disliked:

Overpriced. £5-£8pp more expensive than I'd normally pay for a site with proper facilities. No showers at all. A private portaloo is an extra £70 per week. You have to purchase this as there are no communal toilets.

From the manager...

I guess it is what price for your health. This pop up campsite came about purely to offer people (after covid 19 lockdown) a safe camping experience before another possible lockdown. Camping is rated a safe 2, going to a bar is rated an unsafe 10.
Due to covid 19 an airborne virus it is my wish to provide a toilet on each pitch for the duration of your stay. In choosing just one night stay it is expensive but far safer than a communal toilet on a busy campsite, what price health? Pitches are very spacious again for covid 19 reasons.
We dislike having plastic bottled water but again it is for covid 19 reasons rather than sharing same source water taps and the plastic is recyclable and involves far less transport.
For anyone reading this a reminder that open fires are not allowed on the campsite in 34ºC heat...

Local attractions

This is splendid territory for a walk or a bike ride: there’s plenty of choice for routes either around the farm or further afield around the Fens (and much of the terrain is pleasingly flat to keep life easy, too).

Bikes are popular in Cambridge (15 minutes’ drive) too, so a day of cycling around the city’s colleges and pretty streets should certainly be on the cards too (although you may like to ditch the wheels for a bit of punting or wandering around the Cambridge Backs – the waterways that run behind some of the most scenic of the colleges).

Staying on foot, an easy amble from the site is to wander to art-filled Anglesey Abbey (half an hour’s walk). Chippenham Park Gardens (25 minutes’ drive), Wicken Fen National Nature Reserve (25 minutes) and Ely (half an hour) are other good options for strolls; if you’ve brought the kids along, maybe try Linton Zoo or the Imperial War Museum Duxford (both 25 minutes).
