Stroud Hill Park: Plenty of space on the pitches

General

  • Adults-only rural site next to a golf course in Pidley village
  • Half an hour's drive from Ely and 45 minutes from Cambridge
  • Restaurant, tennis court and three-acre fishing lake on site

Seeking a place that’s entirely free of tiddlers running around underfoot? Settle in at Stroud Hill Park and you’ll find it’s a most grownup affair at this adults-only Cambridgeshire countryside site, in the village of Pidley and 20 minutes’ drive from Huntingdon.

Without any kids to cater for, all the effort has gone into honing the site’s facilities for a more mature palate. At the heart of the place is a timber-framed building that’s home to a shop, an excellent restaurant (with a well-stocked bar, naturally…) and top-notch bathrooms with toilets and showers – all of it set up to be accessible to disabled guests and those a little less steady on their feet.

Likewise, activity options are all aimed at more adult tastes – there’s a tennis court on site, along with a huge three-acre coarse fishing lake packed with bream, roach and chunky carp (up to 25 pounds), and a golf centre next door with an 18-hole course (plus ten pin bowling in case rain stops play). A couple of circular walking routes run from just outside the park, although you may prefer to amble along the 25-minute route to the local village pub…

Days out? This is a good area to get max value out of your National Trust membership, pootle around gardens and little villages or take off to explore the market in St Ives, the cathedral city of Ely or the colleges of Cambridge.

Please note

Facilities/activities including tennis and fishing are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

The restaurant is open between 01/01 and 31/12.

Guests under the age of 18 are not allowed on site.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

If a customer has a disability and needs to be near the amenities block, they must ask on booking and the site owners will do their very best to keep a pitch as close as possible. The key to the disabled toilet facility is available when checking in.

The restaurant and bar are open from 6pm Wednesday - Saturday and from 12pm to 2pm Sunday.

The staff were brilliant, really helpful. The toilets are regularly cleaned and the site was tidy. The onsite resturant looked lovely and the takeaway service was brilliant. The food was delicious.

    Disliked:

The only disappointment was the toilets being closed for 2 hours between 11am and 1pm. I know they need a good clean especially now, and they are spotless, but it would be more convenient if the mens and ladies were shut for an hour each for cleaning.

We were very lucky with the weather, beautiful sunsets across the lake, not that we are fisherman, but there were loads of fish that we fed each night with a walk around, good dog walks straight from site, showers were good, nice & clean, we didn't visit the bar/restaurant so can't comment. On arrival, we were given the choice of pitch,we decided to pitch up the top end of the site as much higher up & near to the dog walk.

    Disliked:

When we first arrived we had the choice of about 4 pitches,we chose one in the corner which was great for the first 4days,until we went out for the day & our neighbours had pitched up so close to us we could not put our car next to the van, this wasnt a problem as we placed our car in the field out of the way,my husband spoke to the groundsman to make sure it was ok to do so,his reply was i don't think you have a choice really,he then told us there was a wedding being held on Saturday & we would have to move the car, this was fine as we were leaving Saturday,(everyone happy) until we went out to the shop & came back the gate had been closed,so we had nowhere to park other than in front of our van, this was very sad as thats the only view we had, & was also in the way of walkers, the owner could have approached us rather than wait until we had gone out,we decided to cut our time away short as this ruined what we had booked & i can look at our car every day from our front room window at home. Yes we could have asked the neighbours to move, but they were old & settled by the time we returned,& yes we could have complained at the time, but the owner also saw the situation we were in but chose to avoid

Local attractions

This is an excellent area for folk who fancy a bit of gentle walking or bike riding on hols – it’s mercifully light on hills and there are plenty of quiet lanes, footpaths and bridleways to make your way along as you traipse between villages, parks and nature reserves.

There’s much strolling to be done at nearby National Trust estates too: check out the 18th-century workings of Houghton Mill (20 minutes), wander through the elegant walled gardens of Wimpole Hall (35 minutes’ drive), peruse Peckover House’s fine gardens (45 minutes) and take an arty amble around Anglesey Abbey (45 minutes).

St Ives (15 minutes) is worth a slice of your time, especially if you make it over there on market day (Monday or Friday) and leave time for a riverside walk to see the swans. For a bit more river-based activity, head to Cambridge (45 minutes) to see the sights while attempting to navigate a punt along the River Cam.

Must see

  • Ely Cathedral (12.7 miles)
  • Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial (12.7 miles)
  • Kings College Chapel (14.5 miles)

National Trust

  • Houghton Mill (5.5 miles)
  • Wicken Fen National Nature Reserve (15.0 miles)
