  • Dog-friendly wildlife haven in the peaceful Cambridgeshire Fens
  • A 20-minute drive from Ely; 45 minutes from Thetford Forest Park
  • Lakes for fishing on site; safe campfire facilities; barbecues allowed
From rumbling rivers and towering pines to historic cathedral towns… find yourself smack bang in the peaceful Cambridgeshire Fens at Head Fen Caravan and Camping. Whether you’re raring for adventure in the outdoors or you’d prefer a little downtime beside the on-site lake, this dog-friendly site has spacious pitches (backed by pretty cool fishing lakes), 20 minutes’ drive from Ely’s historic sites and 45 minutes from the treetop ropes courses and the crisscross of cycling and walking trails at Thetford Forest Park. You may already be a talented angler but even if you aren’t, practise and perfect your fishing skills in the lakes on site. As you’re surrounded by the Fens, it’s also likely you’ll be itching to get out on foot. And happily, your dog won’t have to miss out on the trails, as you can bring up to two dogs along. Things are kept pretty simple on site with showers, toilets and indoor/outdoor sink facilities, plus a washing machine and tumble dryer available at a small cost in case your clothes need a bit of TLC. Barbecues and campfires are both permitted on site, so get ready your favourite recipes and source the ingredients from the shops 15 minutes’ drive in Littleport (there's a riverside pub and several restaurants here too, where you can sip on a drink near to the water).

Electric grass and earth pitch

Liked: Lovely location. Very nice and quiet. Good facilities. Although reception wasn’t open, and we didn’t know where to go once on site, it is well signposted and we were able to speak to someone on the mobile number provided.

Electric grass and earth pitch

Liked: The sunsets

Disliked: Poor customer service, absolutely no communication before arrival about how to access site. Reception closed throughout stay, never saw any staff, tried to report an injury my son sustained but no answer on reception phone number. The campsite is obviously a complete after thought. £30 is extortionate for what it is. Facilities are new but below par for the price. Tried to contact owners before posting this review for them to make an effort to rectify out concerns but heard nothing. Don't waste your money on this site.

Electric grass and earth pitch

Liked: Lovely open space, not regimented like some sites, hot showers! Would be great to add some hardstanding pitches, we would then return in the wetter, winter months!

Disliked: The road in! It's very bumpy, not the campsites fault, but for anyone booking, go slow!

Electric grass and earth pitch

Liked: Peaceful place, lovely small fishing lakes surrounding all pitches. Good amount of toilets and showers but would be good to add mirrors and a chair in the wooden bathroom unit. Only one bathroom had a mirror and when taking shower in small bathroom nowhere to put your stuff, except tiny hanger. Would be lovely to have option to move firepit or have them closer to the tent area. Other than that we were very happy with our stay 😊

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Showers and toilets modern and clean. Beautiful views over the fens, with the little trains chugging back and forth. Massive pitches.

Disliked: Washing up facilities insufficient for number of plots. Expensive for fairly basic facilities. Not peaceful: large groups of multiple families over several pitches going loud into the night every night.

Electric grass and earth pitch

Liked: Everything was just perfect here, sunsets beautiful and we saw a shooting star, peaceful, nice dog walking area, fire pits provided all over and wood and coal sold on site. The owner and staff were absolutely so helpful too. Thank you head fen.

The Weeting Heath National Nature Reserve (40 minutes) is another good stop for wildlife, as is the South Angle Farm Park petting farm (35 minutes) and Thetford Forest Park (45 minutes). The latter is geared up for an activity-packed day with Go Ape, segways and walking and cycling trails too. If you find you have a knack for naming the birds, the large Skylark Garden Centre has a café and wild birds area (25 minutes). While you're in the area, get lost in the nearby Skylark Maize Maze (25 minutes), great for a family-friendly afternoon centred around the maze, playgrounds and rides. Put your balance to the test with paddleboarding, canoeing or swimming in the lakes at Milton Country Park (40 minutes). Wild Tracks Outdoor Activity Park (40 minutes) has more challenging outdoor activities including go-karting. In search of historic sites? Visit Ely (20 minutes) for the Ely Cathedral, Oliver Cromwell’s House and The Stained Glass Museum (20 minutes) or go to Cambridge (50 minutes) for museums, gardens and galleries.
