  • Relaxed rural campsite on the edge of Cannock Chase
  • Five minutes' walk to Great Haywood; a mile to the Shugborough Estate
  • Opposite a farm shop and café; overlooking a canal junction
There's so much to like about canals – the wildlife that lives in and around the water, the flat towpaths for cycling or walking the dog, watching the colourful narrowboats chugging by… So it'll come as no surprise that there's also much to like about Great Haywood Canalside Camping, a relaxed rural site overlooking the northern edge of Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. First of all, there's the fact that this Staffordshire spot is directly opposite a popular farm shop and café, where you can stop to stock up on supplies, call in for a coffee or pick your own berries during the summer months. Number two on the list has got to be how close this place is to Great Haywood village centre – a five-minute stroll is all it takes to get to the nearest pub, pharmacy and convenience store, which is quite something in a spot as peaceful as this. Dog-friendly rules and Great Haywood Canalside Camping’s dedicated dog-walking area make a third great reason to camp here, while last – but by no means least – there's the fact that you're under a mile from the gorgeous green parkland of the National-Trust run Shugborough Estate.

Local attractions

Make sure to allocate at least one full day for pootling around the Shugborough Estate (a mile from site), as this National Trust property is one of the finest country piles around – no mean feat when you're also within striking distance of top-rated attractions like the Trentham Estate (20 minutes' drive) and Sudbury Hall and the Museum of Childhood (30 minutes). Next, head south towards the wilds of Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty for rural rambles, treetop adventures at Go Ape Cannock (15 minutes) or forest bike trails through the green scenery at Birches Valley Forest (15 minutes). Riding enthusiasts will also find heaps to do around here – Cannock Chase Trekking Centre (15 minutes) is a good place to start if you're looking to get set up for a stint in the saddle. Further animal encounters await at kid-pleasing spots like the National Forest Adventure Farm (30 minutes), where you can get up close and personal with the animals, at Trentham Monkey Forest (30 minutes) or at Peak Wildlife Park (40 minutes). Great Haywood Canalside Camping is also a convenient 35-minute drive from Alton Towers, Britain's largest theme park.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The area is absolutely gorgeous. Great community vibe. The guy at the front gate running the campsite is an absolute legend; always friendly and accommodating. On site toilets are always clean. We stay here at least twice a month and love it! Couldn’t recommend more!

From the manager: Thx for the compliments Emily, but would that be a legend or leg-end lol :D

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: I had once again a lovely relaxing stay overall. Really enjoyed my spot, where I pitched and the environment near the river bank.
Management supervisor brilliant as always, like minded people on site. I will be returning very soon.

Disliked: Strange male camper that had to be told 3 times to leave me alone after invasive visit where I was pitched. (Never seen or spoke to him prior.) Management response, great and local sane campers onsite offered to assist if issues arose through the night. Nothing did thankfully, but it did put me on high alert on my last night. In 4 years never experienced that, as a solo female camper. Ashame really, as people just need to know boundaries like minded or otherwise.

From the manager: Totally agree Liz, the man's actions where totally out of order, and he was clearly worse for wear fa drinking. I hope the reaction of our regular community of campers helped put you at ease somewhat. Look forward to seeing you again soon. Pete (site caretaker)
