- Luxury Shropshire glamping site 10 minutes’ drive from Church Stretton
- Carding Mill Valley hikes 10 minutes’ drive; Ludlow 25 minutes
- Private hot tub with each tent, plus welcome drinks and fresh milk
Located in the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Feather Down - Acton Scott is a peaceful glamping site on a 20-acre plantation of native trees. The Acton family has owned the land since the 12th century and is focused on preserving the heritage of the estate, with its farmsteads, timber-framed stone cottages and open pasture.
Host Tamara will arrange evening drinks on the day you check in – not a bad way to start your holiday, you’ll agree. This warm welcome gives you the chance to meet your fellow Feather Downers and find out more about the local area. Then, you can fire up the barbecue (not supplied, so be sure to bring your own) and have a post-dinner soak in your private hot tub under the stars as you listen to the owls hooting over the fields.
Accommodation comes with a fresh bottle of milk from the Proper Good Dairy, whose cows graze in the nearby fields. It’s a short walk to the farm for a top-up, and en route you can take in the views of the splendid Shropshire Hills.
Walking is a popular pastime around these parts, with hiking trails in the nature reserve at Ragleth Hill (five minutes’ drive) and at Carding Mill Valley (10 minutes). For keen anglers, Oaklands Leisure and Fishery (five minutes) has three lakes with carp and trout, plus a swimming pond.
A food shop on site sells a few essentials, and the market town of Church Stretton (10 minutes’ drive) has heaps of restaurants and pubs.

Turn off the A49 at the Acton Scott signpost. Continue straight on, past The Historic Working Farm visitor entrance, then turn off the road through the third right-hand field entrance. There is a small sign saying The Shooting Lodge. Open the metal field gate and close it behind you (there are livestock in the field). Continue down the track to a second metal field gate; open it, close it behind you and follow the track, which rises steeply up a hill. The parking area is immediately at the top of the brow on the left-hand side.
It’s not all about horses at Ludlow Race Club (20 minutes’ drive) – though if you want to take a flutter, this track surrounded by gentle hills is a fabulous place to do so. The racecourse also organises food festivals and antiques fairs, so it’s worth keeping an eye on their events calendar.
When you’ve had enough of cooking your own meals, why not head to Ludlow (25 minutes)? This small market town has made a name for itself as a gastronomic haven, with multiple award-winning restaurants and several delis selling delicious local specialities. After eating your fill, check out the fine views of the River Teme from the Norman castle and go to Whitcliffe Common Nature Reserve for a spot of birdwatching.
From mountain-biking trails to woodland walks (including sensory routes and a Gruffalo Sculpture trail), Wyre Forest National Nature Reserve (50 minutes) is the place to go for outdoor activities. Those who want to upgrade from ‘activity’ to ‘adventure’ can take part in the Go Ape Treetop Challenge, with zipwires and hanging bridges.
