The picnic area

General

  • Remote and rural site in the Lincolnshire countryside
  • Home to many rescue animals including hens, pigs, geese and ducks
  • Well-stocked fishing lake

What a lush site this is for gainful countryside holidays in the Lincolnshire countryside, whiling days away fishing, woodland walking and just lazing by the lakeside with open book or one's very own thoughts.

There are animals too… Small and family-run Sunflower Park near Gainsborough has taken in quite a few rescue animals in their time (they're a friendly and welcoming lot here), so on site you'll meet the three family pets as well as some alpacas, several ex-battery hens and their strutting cockerel. Also adopted are a family of geese, ducks, Kunekune pigs and a couple of Gloucester old spots: do make sure to say hi to all.

As you might guess, this is a relaxed and amiable site, set remotely and rurally on a five-acre plot that includes paddocks, a playground, open pastureland, a private woodland walk and a well-stocked fishing lake exclusively for guests' use.

You might reckon the park's remote rural setting makes it a wildlife haven too, and you'd reckon right: its boundaries run directly into Laughton Forest's Tuetoes Wood, a Forestry Commission nature haven for walking and cycling among the trees, and home to wildlife like deer, foxes, owls, rabbits, jays, pheasants, cuckoos, woodpeckers – all within viewable and hearing distance from your pitch.

Sunflower Park has toilets, showers, a drying room, a launderette and ice pack freezing. Firepits are available for hire for the whole of guests' stays and arrive full and ready to light.

We’ve just returned from a 3 night stay on an electric pitch and felt it only right to leave a glowing review. The location is fantastic, it feels really remote but isn’t actually very far from local pubs, shops, villages etc. The electric pitches are huge and as there are only 6 of them it would never be overcrowded. There is a wild camping option too which is at a nice quiet end of the site, and we’d happily camp there if we were coming in a group.

The site is very well maintained and has great facilities. The toilets and wet rooms were always clean during our stay, and there is another room with access to a freezer along with plug sockets to charge your phones etc as well as a well stocked book and dvd library to borrow from. None of this costs any extra, which is a really nice touch. There’s also a great camp shop that sells almost anything you could ever need, alongside some hand crafted bits and bobs like bird houses and lanterns.

The animals and owners are what really makes this site so special though. What a treat to be able to get so close to and interact with all the rescue animals there, which are too numerous to list (my favourites were the dogs and the black sheep I think). Ian and Josie are both lovely and absolutely nothing seemed too much trouble for them. We’ve never had site owners be so warm and welcoming towards us, and we got the impression that they really love what they do and that comes across in how the site is run.

We were gutted to leave today and will definitely be back.

This is one of the most friendly sites we have been on, good play area, with good shower /toilet and separate toilets, washing up sinks and laundry room. And quite a few rescued animals to see. Our little grandaughter who is nearly 3 years old. Loved everything in fact we need a break to recover. We have been 3 times in 3 weeks running for 2 nights. But we will have to wait until next year to return.

Thanks for a fantastic stay, our grandaughter loved every minute, she loved the animals and the park. The owners make you feel very welcome always about, very clean toilets and showers. We was on electric hookup this time and the pitches are large. The site at night time is very dark so a torch will be a good thing to take. We look forward to returning next year.

Fantastic site with an amazing park for the children, we all loved every second of our stay and our boys cried when we had to go home. Ian and Josie couldn’t do enough to help and the fire pits were such a lovely touch. Breakfast was amazing, and facilities were clean you didn’t dread going to the toilets or for a shower, thankyou for such a lovely weekend we will be back again soon.

Lovely feeling site. Very friendly and helpful staff. Was on pitch 6, all the pitches are a very generous pitch size. Very clean, cafe looks great but did not use as we did not know there was a cafe, will use next time. The best thing of all we wasn’t bothered by staff left to our own devises. Shop is very well stocked it’s good to know bread and milk and many other provisions can be got on site. Animals are lovely and look very good.
Grass on the pitch is a little worn but it is near the end of the season.
And you can hire a fire pit for £10 with wood in it fantastic. Car to wait to go back!

Local attractions

Walkers, hikers, cyclists, energetic runners and nature spotters have Tuetoes Wood right beside Sunflower Park, the Forestry Commission-managed and publicly accessible part of vast Laughton Forest.

If you're an avid animal fan, take time to get to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park just outside Doncaster, home to a menagerie of over 300 from around the world, and to The Deep at Hull, one of the biggest aquariums in the UK and a habitat for over 3000 marine critters.

Going south, history buffs can get to Lincoln for eleventh century Lincoln Cathedral, the third biggest in Britain after St Paul's in London and York Minster. Lincoln Castle is also well worth a look, to gaze geekily upon one of the four original remaining copies of the Magna Carta.
