  • Peaceful site set in the Royal Forest of Dean
  • A 20-minute drive from Tintern Abbey and Chepstow Castle
  • Less than a mile from two excellent village pubs
Green fields galore + a meandering brook + gently sloping hills = a splendid spot to pitch up. Beanhill Farm may look like a humble enough place, but its location in the Royal Forest of Dean (how posh) puts it firmly into 'excellent area' territory. In this secluded corner of Gloucestershire, guests can take in valley views by day and stargazing opportunities overhead by night (a firepit and wood can be arranged to keep you warm after dusk). The prevailing colour of those views depends on the season: bluebells fill the surrounding woods in spring, while bright yellow rapeseed takes over for a bright backdrop in summer months. The A48 is less than a mile away, making it easy to plan day trips either side of the Welsh border. The nearest supermarket, in the nearby town of Lydney, is a 10-minute drive away; if you'd rather someone else sorted the eats, stroll down into Alvington (20 minutes' walk) for local food and an ale or two at one of two local pubs. Barbecues are allowed for open-air cookouts, and you’re welcome to bring your dog along for this rural jaunt. All the essentials – a washing-up area, toilet block and showers – are provided to keep everyday life ticking along.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Quiet lane location. Toilet/washing area

Disliked: I felt a bit hemmed in. You could park where you wanted, but as all outside pitches taken, I felt a bit uncomfortable parking in the middle. From the photos I thought you could walk around the lake. There was no where to walk the dog. There were a lot of private signs around the field - and if there were any access to woods, fields or the lake it wasn't clear. The toilets were clean - didn't use the showers so can't comment. - families seem to be enjoying themselves which was nice. I booked for 3 nights and stayed 1, only because it just wasn't for me.

From the manager: Sorry it wasn’t for you, there are 2 private signs - 1 on each gate. We are a working farm and have cattle that graze around different parts of the farm. The campsite offers lots of space and lovely views and there are lots of places to walk from the campsite with your dog without upsetting the cattle.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: The site itself was lovely and quiet and well located for attractions.

Disliked: The showers and toilets were not as clean as I have experienced at other sites. It was disappointing that after paying £1.00 for a shower token I was not able to vary the temperature and try as I might, I was not able to complete my shower with one token and two tokens were too much. I would recommend showering in pairs if possible. Although the local pubs looked nice they were very busy and we could not get a table over our two night stay. I would recommend booking in advance. We went on a bank holiday weekend and the site was not overly crowded which was lovely. You can park where you like which worked well for us on our visit. Overall it is a lovely site that could be improved with more user-friendly facilities.

From the manager: Thanks for the comments… showering in pairs could work for some 🥴

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Lovely site and host, with plenty of space to pitch up without feeling too close to anyone else. The showers were instantly hot as soon as you put the token in, no waiting for the water to heat up. Definitely would visit again.

Disliked: Not really a dislike, just felt like the 2 times I came to reception I caught the family having dinner and felt like I was imposing slightly. Not made to feel that way by the lovely lady that served/assisted me but more so i would feel like that if I went to anyone’s kitchen while they were having dinner.

From the manager: Thanks for the comment, I’m sorry you felt a little uncomfortable.. I do run the site on my own but obviously it’s our family home too 😊

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Convenient location to M4/M5 corridor, and forest of dean. Large flat field for camping.

Disliked: The campsite toilet area smelled due to the septic tank vent system in place. Only 2 toilets and two showers for potentially hundreds of campers. Aweful phone signal in the area. Campsite owner had 'end of season fatigue' (in their words) which was no excuse for their bad mood on our holiday when making simple and friendly enquiries.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Actually there are 3 toilets and 3 showers.. and our maximum capacity is less than 80 guests.. a little over exaggerating on your part ! we do have terrible Wi-Fi so don’t offer it.. EE is usually pretty good though. I was tired .. but unfortunately when I’m closed I have lots of other things to do and can’t always serve people who think opening times don’t apply to them 😁

Disliked: Check in and out times seem tight - *check in after 3pm and leave by 10am. We arrived early and made to feel we were causing an inconvenience. Site was not full so don't see why it was an issue.

From the manager: Hi, sorry but you arrived 3 hours early and we were still trying to tidy the site .. and we had guests who were still checking out. ☹️

Local attractions

Outdoorsy types will have plenty of options in the Forest of Dean. Offa’s Dyke Path (10 minutes’ drive) straddles the English-Welsh border: following the route down towards the Sedbury Cliffs near Chepstow makes for a particularly pleasant jaunt. The site is also 10 miles south of the popular Family Cycle Trail, where guests can make a whistle-stop tour of the surrounding countryside. The circular 11-mile route runs through the Cannop Valley, along the old tracks of the Severn and Wye railway (passing through abandoned stations) and passes the remains of former coal mines at Foxes Bridge and Lightmoor. Mallards Pike (20 minutes' drive), where there is a car park, is also home to a Go Ape high ropes course. If you want to experience greenery with a bit of a twist, head to Puzzlewood (15 minutes) for a maze (as the name suggests), plus farm animals, an adventure playground and an interactive treasure hunt for the kids. For a proper step back in time, Tintern Abbey (20 minutes' drive) is surely one of the most impressive ruins in Wales. Make a day of it by contrasting its elegant Gothic facade with the sturdy walls of Chepstow Castle (also 20 minutes), built in days of yore to defend the banks of the River Wye.
