Orchard View Farm: Caravan pitch with a view of the Chiltern Hills

General

  • Well-equipped site on a working farm overlooking the Chiltern Hills
  • A 15-minute drive from Thame and 40 minutes from Oxford
  • Café-restaurant, bike hire, butchery and farm shop with a deli counter

Wake up to see the sun rising over the Chiltern Hills while listening to the gentle murmur of sheep, pigs and deer during a stay at Orchard View Farm, a scenic Buckinghamshire spot within 15 minutes’ drive of Aylesbury, Thame and Princes Risborough.

Not that guests will ever need to venture to the town for food if they don't fancy moving – eats and drinks are sorted courtesy of the site’s fantastically stocked farm shop and deli or by dining at the Trough Garden Kitchen. This café and restaurant serves up a range of meals, including those made from ingredients sourced at the site’s award-winning butchery and cooked in woodburning ovens.

Looking after nature is just as important to the owners of this small farm as serving up tasty grub – they’ve worked hard to create a serene and scenic environment in the grounds by planting wildflower meadows, more than 100 trees and over 350 metres of mixed native hedging.

Orchard View Farm is five minutes’ drive from the western edges of the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so it's safe to suggest that the local area is also rather pretty for walks. Crime fiction fan? Or just fond of cute country cottages? Head off on a self-guided Midsomer Murders-themed tour of nearby villages (you can download a trail map from the internet).

Oxford is 40 minutes’ drive from the site and central London takes an hour and 20 minutes to reach.

Level grass pitches and good showers05/17/2021

I stayed in the fallowfield area- bigger pitches - great if you have a 8berth tent etc.
Beware though as you have to lug everything from the car park to the pitch - there are 3 trollies but everyone has to share them!
Myself and 2 friends were the only ones camping so loved the peacefulness but had a little road noise. Farm animals onsite - love the feel of nature.
Very good level grassy area to pitch in - this is important!
    Clean toilets and good showers.
I bought a couple of things from the farm shop- they have essentials too - always good.
Didn't eat at the café onsite but the food looked amazing and was definitely popular with visitors. Would have the Sunday roast next time :)
Will come back as its a next to the Chilterns for great walks and the Grand Union Canal is not far.
Didn't use accommodation (Glamping tents) / no children so can't score.

    Disliked:

Only 2 trollies and 1 x sack trolley - not good for more than 3 bookings arriving at similar times or all leaving at 11am!

Would be really good if there was a freezer to put ice blocks in (maybe not because of Covid?).

2 x ladies, 2 x gents and 1 x accessible toilet. Might have to queue if its a busy time...(not a problem for us but in future).

From the manager...

Many thanks for your comprehensive review. Firstly I must apologise....we actually do have a freezer available for campers use. Its outside of the shop overlooking the car park under the lean to. I forgot to mention it! We have taken on board the comments about the toilets...we are looking at improving the facilities but oribably not able to do it this season as we will need planning permission. Your review has been very useful. Steve

This campsite is really nicely sized and while being well laid out, it isn't detracting from being quite an free and open site.
The camping facilities are excellent (loo's, shower, washing up) and very clean. They seemed to be continually serviced.
The campsite farm shop and cafe is insane, well stocked with local produce, the most amazing butcher, (and our kids favourite, the eggs from the chickens on-site).
The cafe provided a yummy lunch when we couldn't be bothered to cook one day, and we were continually felt welcome by the camp site manager.
There is a nice play area on-site, and lots of animals to keep the kids entertained.
When we return we will explore the walks more.
I would class this as a 'hidden gem'!!!

    Disliked:

There is nothing to dislike about this place.

Wow.....I feel emotional about your review. Taking the time to complete it means so much to us. Thank you very much for your kind words. When we get it right it makes us feel good....when we get it wrong we strive to improve. Many thanks you were good considerate campers. Steve

Many thanks for taking the trouble to provide a review and useful feedback. Our firepits are specially made for us using high quality thick steel and therefore do not scorch the grass medowland. Our fire pits are available as extras and can be ordered in advance this means that during busy periods they are not always available on the day. Sorry about this and I hope it didnt spoil your visit to us. We do have more firepits being delivered this week! Steve

Ease yourself into your escape slowly by setting off on walks through the Chiltern Hills (five minutes’ drive). This Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is a 324-square-mile chalk escarpment running from the River Thames in Oxfordshire to Hitchin in Hertfordshire.

Highlights here include Wendover Woods, a Forestry Commission collection of trees with fitness and cycling trails, while four miles away (and 15 minutes’ drive from the park) is Aylesbury with its hodgepodge of Georgian, Jacobean and Tudor architecture. Browse the Bucks County Museum’s local history and culture exhibits, making sure to stop by the Roald Dahl Children’s Gallery for displays championing the characters from the novelist’s books.

Just outside the town, wander around Waddesdon Manor, a French-inspired chateau with gorgeous gardens, or turn back the clock to the 1940s at Bletchley Park (40 minutes), the country house where the Allies broke the enigma code during the Second World War.

If city trips are what you fancy, set off for the compelling colleges of Oxford (35 minutes) or the spectacular sights of Central London (an hour and 20 minutes).
