The site is extremely exposed as it sits on the side of a hill running up from Derwent reservoir. Whilst the views are lovely, if it is windy, which I suspect is most of the time if the bent over trees are anything to go by, there is no shelter and you will feel the full force of the wind (it was gusting 45mph this weekend). If you are in a van or camper that’s probably not an issue, we were lucky we were in a tough little bivvy, a larger/taller or more flimsy carbon fibre tent would’ve been a problem. Just something to bear in mind when you are choosing your site.
The toilet/shower building looked new from the outside but was very basic and unfinished on the inside. There are two showers but the water pressure for the warm water was so low only one was useable, if someone was already in one, the other didn’t work. For £25 a night with facilities, I suppose I did expect the showers to work.
This site is on the A68 so there is some traffic noise as lorries run along there through the night. Again, if you are in a van you probably wouldn’t hear it. If you are looking for a nice relaxing site where you want to enjoy views and peace and quiet, and you are in a tent, unfortunately I would recommend you look somewhere else.
Oh, and there no signage on the main road so when you see the Manor House Inn, turn there!
