  • 500-acre woodlands with two small lakes, 1.5 hours from Memphis
  • Asphalt roads into park for easy access: no need to drive off road
  • Archery and gun ranges, pool, fishing, canoeing, hiking and restaurant
Active adventurers, this is your park. There's simply stacks to do around the woodland setting of Big Buck Resort in western Tennessee, where you can be kept happily occupied from dawn to dusk... and then beyond. The park covers over 500 acres (that's a lot of wandering) including two small lakes for canoeing and fishing. You can also get stuck into hiking trails and all-terrain vehicle trails, test your skills at the gun, archery and trap ranges, cycle around these scenic grounds, or have a go at basketball, volleyball, table tennis and pool. A pool and a playground are also to hand. Should this be somewhat too much activity for your gentle self, the park has a big furnished deck over one of the lakes for you to settle down on to spy the plentiful Big Buck wildlife, and there are fire rings and picnic tables for extending your restful hours into the evening. You can also cook up your supper in the communal kitchen in Big Buck's large central lodge, or – if you're feeling particularly restful – have it served to you at the restaurant. Big Buck is just outside the small town of Hornsby, 12 miles from Bolivar, 16 miles from Selmer and about an hour and a half east of Memphis. It can accommodate all sizes of RVs on its gravel park pads, all of which have picnic tables and private individual charcoal grills. Shared amenities include an RV dump station, a laundry room, and a neatly-kept cedar-lined amenities block with showers. Park staff are available 24 hours a day and a park ranger station is at the Big Buck entrance.

Local attractions

You're within easy day trip distance of several famed sights from Big Buck's Highway 64 setting including Memphis, Beale Street and Graceland within 90 minutes. Venturing further, Nashville is under three hours away. Those heading to Memphis should take time too for Mud Island, the peninsula between the Mississippi and Woof River Harbour. Get there via the Memphis Suspension Railway monorail (by car or on foot), and hire a bike or pedal boat from Mud Island's Mississippi River Park. Closer to home is Shiloh Battlefield Visitor Center (35 minutes), commemorating the 1872 Battle of Shiloh of the American Civil War. Connected to this is the Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center: if you have kids along with you, they can become junior rangers for the day around both centres.
