  • Green and serene site in the midst of mountains and waterfalls
  • A 10-minute drive from Catalonia’s only national park, five from Espot
  • Metres from the Escrita river with an on-site bar, shop and wifi
Spectacular scenery awaits. Catalonia’s Càmping Riu Gelat, under 10 minutes' drive from the region’s only national park, Aigüestortes i Estany of Saint Maurici, is in a region of the Spanish Pyrenees that should be mighty memorable, being right next to two waterfalls and surrounded by gorgeous greenery, leafy trees and a backdrop of hills. The pretty village of Espot is under 20 minutes' walk away along the Escrita river for food shopping and tapas hunting, or you can stick to the site and fill up at the shop or bar. Woodland areas nearby are also fab for foraging mushrooms in the right season (and with an idea of how to avoid the deadly ones…) An itinerary can be sorted while snacking, with many an activity to squeeze into your hol. The national park's lakes (several of which are rich with tasty brown trout) are all ready for explores, as are the walking tracks, high peaks and boreal forests. Make your way to the waters of Lake San Mauricio, a 25-minute drive away through Aigüestortes, for fishing or veer the same distance east to La Torrassa for canoeing and kayaking. Climbing can also be had around this area, while trekkers might want to pull on their boots to master one of the many marked paths – including to waterfalls like the Cascada Ratera, a 25-minute drive from the site.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Location between national park and Espot village. Able and helpful staff. Excellent showers. Breathtaking setting.

Disliked: Nothing about the site but you'll be here for the national park. The road up to the official parking for the national park was very steep (first gear over one stretch) for a small car. The car park is then an hour long walk from the main area of the park (a beautiful walk through woods but giving less time / energy for the main area of the park) It was worth the ca. 5.70 euro one way (double for a return (summer 2022)) for the shared 4x4s from the village up to the park itself.

Local attractions

Once you’ve gotten to know Espot and its ever-so-varied vicinity – perhaps on horseback from the riding centre in the village – other riverside towns worth visiting in the region include Sort (35 minutes away) with its medieval castle and nearby watersports activities on the Noguera Pallaresa river. Wildlife aficionado? Drive for another 15 minutes to Pujalt for its butterfly museum if you’re a fan of the fluttery creatures. Roams around the region DIY style will have you passing small villages of stone houses and Romanesque bridges (ask on site for suggestions), while those who prefer organised tours can set off on a 4x4 trip. Visiting in winter? Snowboard and ski resorts like Super Espot (five minutes) and Baqueira Beret (35 minutes) mean you can slalom, sledge and snowshoe along the slopes. In the warmer months, adventurous types can try out ziplining and bungee jumping at the national park.
