Well now, isn’t Jay quite the lucky thing? A beach lodge just behind the dunes, a mere few strides from the white sands and the glittering waters of the Indian Ocean… it’s like something out of those daydreams you have on a Monday morn.
Real it is though, and you can grab yourself a slice of this beachside lifestyle with a jaunt to Jays Beach Lodge, right on the shoreline in Macaneta and 40 kilometres north of Maputo. This quiet resort makes a fab place to kick back for a few days (or months, or forever…), pottering on and off the beach and perhaps occasionally heading out for horse rides, boat trips or deep sea fishing (BYO boat; the site has a deep sea fishing licence).
Decide to dedicate yourself entirely to days on site and you’ll not get bored: facilities here include a volleyball area, football goals and a playground, and there’s an open-air pool for those days when the sea looks a little rough round the edges.
Naturally with a beach comes a barbecue, and all the bits you’ll need are in place here – no need to lug charcoal, so just come along armed with bits to grill (a stop at the fish market in Marracuene, 25 minutes away, is a fine idea). Sunk so far into that indolent lifestyle that you can’t bear to lift a finger? Sidle over to the bar-restaurant and have the friendly folks there supply you with meals and drinks while you continue your day of lounging at the outdoor tables.

Should you tire of wandering up and down the sands (what?), head inland for boat trips on the Incomati river or to saddle up for a day on horseback. For a taste of life away from your little corner of paradise, a local lodge organises walking tours to give guests insights into the community, culture and cuisine.
Or perhaps you just can’t get enough of that coastline – in which case, mosey back to Maputo (an hour and 15 minutes) for boat trips to the stunning islands of Santa Maria, Inhaca and Portuguese Island, stopping for swims, snorkelling and a seafood lunch along the way.
If you fancy a bit of time meandering around Maputo, make sure to include a visit to the colonial Fortaleza da Nossa Senhora de Conceicao and the artists’ studios in the Núcleo De Arte area. Foodies will want to include the fish market on their wish list too: plan ahead for the night’s braai by haggling for a tasty specimen, or settle in at one of the restaurants to have the experts prep one for you.

Jays Beach Lodge cancelation policy
No refunds within 10 days of arrival date.
No refunds/discounts for inclement weather, late arrivals or early departures.
If you need to cancel or amend your booking, please give as much notice as possible so that someone else has the chance to book. You may wish to buy holiday insurance for cancelations and for your property/injury whilst away.
