  • A spectacular setting at the foot of Mont Blanc, 6km from Courmayeur
  • Strategic starting point for walking, trekking and mountaineering
  • Sauna, massages, three play areas, yoga and bar-restaurant
If stints in a sauna sound splendid after tough treks in north-west Italy and the Valle d’Aosta, this has to be the park to pick. For not only does Camping Aiguille Noire have a spectacular setting at the foot of Mont Blanc a couple of minutes’ stroll from the Dora Baltea river and 10 minutes’ drive from Courmayeur, its spa facilities also have views of the peak of Aiguille Noire de Peuterey… You can book massages and steam room sessions too – perhaps after pounding the muscles further with games of table football, table tennis and volleyball or stretching them out at one of the yoga classes for kids and adults. And if the kids aren’t keen on practising their tree poses? They can always sprint off to one of the three playgrounds dotted around the grounds. Small trekkers are also sure to appreciate racing about in the lush surrounds with easy access to nature walks and mountain scenery on local hiking and biking trails and climbing routes. Well-marked paths lead to mountain shelters for rests and soaking up the stunning views. The setting’s also close to mountain adventures in France: Mont Blanc straddles both countries and the France/Italy border is 20 minutes’ drive from the site. A shuttle bus to Courmayeur stops at the site entrance and bike hire’s available if you’re venturing further away. Back on site after trips in either nation, a common room with a drinks vending machine can quench your thirst and hungry hikers can raid the freezer for guests’ use, pick up snacks at the well-stocked shop selling local and international food to cook up at the barbecue area or order meals at the bar-restaurant. Other amenities at this park include showers and toilets with disabled access, free hot water for washing up, a campervan service area and a laundry.

Local attractions

If the kids you’re travelling with are particularly energetic, a climbing wall and kids’ park is over in Courmayeur 10 minutes’ drive away. Or perhaps they might like to head up towards the clouds on the Skyway Monte Bianco cable car rides over the Mer de Glace glacier and onto Chamonix in France (15 minutes)? About the same distance away is the Secure Mountain Foundation, which organises mountain- and glacier-climbing instruction and advice every summer, if you’re especially keen on your winter sports. Post-safety chats – or a tricky trek – treat yourself to a dip in the Pré Saint Didier thermal baths (20 minutes).

Power optional grass RV campsite

Liked: The views were stunning, the staff charming, with good English and French, on site delivery of pizza was good. Basic, open campsite. Perfect for active families.

Disliked: My electricity packed up in minus 5 deg C. So a cold night. The facilities are basic but okay. Access is down some fairly tight lanes, no problem in a regular camper van but I'd be reluctant to tow a caravan here. You need to be able to reverse round hairpin bends as local farmers in big plant won't, and I don't blame them.

Power optional grass RV campsite

Liked: Really beautiful views and friendly staff. Dog friendly.
Staff were so very helpful as we had such uncertain plans around Tor Des Geants. They allowed us huge flexibility (we left our awning up whilst the van toured with crew for the race and gave us a minimal charge for this).

Power optional grass RV campsite

Liked: Amazing views from the site, with hikes and mountain bike trails at your doorstep.
The owners are really nice and helpful, and the campsite has all the facilities you need for an enjoyable stay, including a lovely restaurant/bar available.

Disliked: Not really a dislike but not a fan of coin operated showers but understand why. Had to queue a few times for the shower could imagine in the more busy months this would be a frustration.

Power optional grass RV campsite

Liked: Amazing scenery. Mount Blanc is stunning. The road up here is a little hairy so worth following a bus for the first drive. Only stayed one night, a bit slow in reception however extremely friendly and lovely little on site shop. Awesome location.

Disliked: Showers were on a coin system, so first one per person free, not an issue but very tiny and not the cleanest.
