  • Stay on a working farm with tours of on-site olive oil mill
  • Less than an hour from Ionian coast beaches
  • Scenic views over olive groves and surrounding countryside
Want to get a taste of Italian gem Toscana while avoiding the crowds? Make your way to Agriturismo Le Farnie, a family-friendly site less than five minutes’ drive from the medieval village of Altomonte in the Cosenza region of Calabria – those in the know call the area an island of 14th-century Tuscany. Le Farnie is a prime spot for a nature-filled getaway: it’s a working farm producing olive oil from its mills – as well as a host of other products, including cherries and figs – so prepare to unwind with stunning views over terraced groves (check out those photos). You can nab a behind-the-scenes tour of the mill and get treated to a tasting. Then, when you’re ready to explore away from the site, the team will help to organise excursions into Pollino National Park, Altomonte and surrounding areas, rafting trips on the Lao river, and visits to the local museum and liquorice factory. Back at Le Farnie, relax on the terrace with views over the groves to Altomonte before grabbing a table for dinner in the on-site restaurant (which also serves breakfast). If you’d prefer to cater for yourself (literally), stock up on supplies and snacks in the Altomonte supermarkets or treat yourself with a trip to one of the restaurants within 20 minutes’ drive.

Local attractions

Your first stop when you venture away from Agriturismo Le Farnie should definitely be Altomonte. The medieval village may be small, but there’s a lot packed in: visit the Gothic-Romanesque cathedral, the stunning Dominican cloisters, the civic museum (with works of art from Simone Martini, Bernardo Daddi and Paolo di Ciacio), Castle Altomonte, the Norman Tower and an amphitheatre that's a central focus of tons of festivals throughout the year. Want to get back to nature? You’re well-placed here: Le Farnie is less than 40 minutes’ drive from Pollino National Park, where you can see the prehistoric cave paintings in Grotta del Romito, bask in the hot springs at Grotta delle Ninfe, visit the scenic Ponte del Diavolo and make your way to the Santuario di Santa Maria delle Armi, with fab views over the Sibari plain. For beachside getaways, you’re roughly halfway between the Ionian and Tyrrhenian coasts (though the Ionian pips it for convenience) so travel the 40 minutes to Marina di Sibari, or the hour and 10 minutes to Sangineto Lido, for ocean swims and strolls along the sand. History buffs might want to spend a little more time on the Ionian coast to pay visits to the National Archeological Museum of Sibaritide and the luxe Castello Ducale, before making their way back to home base for the Villa Romana, 15 minutes from Le Farnie.
