If you're never too far from a pair of walking boots or joggers, make your way to Ferienparadies Mühlenbach, a family-friendly site 10 minutes’ drive from the Saxony town of Soltau – it's an adventurer's dream (and it's not too bad for the non-adventurers either). Travelling with get-up-and-goers and laze-abouters? Active types can explore the Heidekreis region by hiring an e-bike, e-scooter, Segway or hoverboard from reception, or by sticking with the car for excursions to the Lüneburger Heath 15 minutes away. Prefer a laid-back day on site? Traipse over to the edge of the peaceful swimming lake, where overheated guests can cool off and canine chums can splash about in their own special area. Speaking of (hu)man’s best friend, the site’s pretty well set up for four-legged companions: there’s a fenced-in dog field where they can let off steam off-leash, and they can be signed up for training courses with experienced dog trainers if they can no longer tell their sits from their walkies. When hunger kicks in, there’s an on-site restaurant – toddle along in the morning for the breakfast buffet or claim a spot in the evening for German-Italian dinners. Alternatively, give stays the self-catering treatment with a pitstop in the small self-service market for essentials, committing to an evening by the barbecue.

Local attractions

Start local explores in the town of Soltau, 10 minutes’ drive from base – there’s plenty here to entertain the whole family, from a toy museum to an observation deck giving views over the area. Finishing hols in Soltau may be a good decision too, as there’s a fab thermal spa for a final boost of zen before calling it quits. If no getaway is complete without a trip around the shops, this is a prime choice: the site’s five minutes (less than half an hour’s walk) from discounted clothes at the designer outlets, and the cities of Hamburg and Hanover are within about an hour if more options are needed. More of an adrenaline junkie than a bargain seeker? The rollercoasters and rides of Heide Park are five minutes from the site, there’s an indoor ski slope 15 minutes away in Bispingen, a waterpark is 20 minutes from base, and it’s a half-hour journey to foot golf and the climbing forest at BUHL Activity Park Walsrode. History buffs will be drawn perhaps to Dat ole Huus and Rischmannshof Heath Museum (around 30 minutes), which are among the oldest open-air museums in Germany, and Iserhatsche’s castle (and beer museum) and the Panzer museum are both within 20 minutes of the site. Those more at home among the animals will be purring with excitement hereabouts – there are four separate wildlife parks within half an hour of base.

Liked: Angenehme Atmosphäre da viele Familien und Möglichkeiten zum Spielen, sauber und Preis Leistung passt. Stellplätze auch direkt am See.

Disliked: Eingeschränkte W-Lan Reichweite nur im Eingangsbereich. Keine Möglichkeit für Brötchen oder Einkauf vor Ort. See ist im Hochsommer recht trübe.

Liked: prettige ontvangst. mooie plek voor de tent toegewezen gekregen. ondanks de grootte een vrij rustige camping.

Disliked: volgens de website was er ontbijt te verkrijgen. dit bleek helaas iet het geval te zijn. ook het "winkeltje"was geen winkel, maar automaten van waaruit snacks, koffie en (fris) drank te verkrijgen was.

Liked: We could not stay there despite booking before.

Disliked: We arrived at 9pm after a long delay at the channel tunnel. Reception closed with a phone number provided. Rang the number and being told we are to late to be booked in. No one able to come out. No offer to stay anywhere else. No refund offered. Recommended another camp site. Was also closed. This was a weekday in late July, high season.

Disliked: Ikke kafe Kun kontanter, burde ha sagt det første dag. Måtte kjøre rundt å lete etter minibank før avreise

Disliked: As you walk further into the site, there are many abandoned huts & caravans which are overgrown, I walked the whole site & followed the signs for Dog walks but found no fenced in area to let dog run loose, nor a dog area of the lake, there isn’t any food on site just vending machines, though there is a hotel/ restaurant on the main road which was good.I had to ask for a map of the site, which was printed so small you couldn’t read it.we were pitched with what appeared to be 5 travelers who all had vans,taking up most of the area we were in.
