- Well-equipped family site a 10-minute drive from the river Verdon
- Museum of Prehistory five minutes’ drive; Lake Sainte-Croix 20 minutes
- Outdoor pool; playground and kids’ club; evening entertainment
A gorgeously wild corner of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department, in south-eastern France, is the setting for Verdon les Grands Domaines. Just because the surrounding landscape is rugged doesn’t mean your holiday should be, and the owners of this peaceful spot within a wooded estate have created a site with a vast array of facilities to keep families entertained.
Everybody knows that if the children aren’t happy, nobody is. With a playground, games room and TV room, plus organised activities (from archery to treasure hunts) for both kids and teens, the children should have zero complaints. If all else fails, the outdoor pool is usually a big hit with guests of all ages. (And it comes with a paddling area.)
Then, of course, there’s the main local attraction: the river Verdon, which flows gently between tall limestone cliffs a 10-minute drive away. (Or 10 minutes by bike, which you can hire on site.) Its emerald waters might prove irresistible if you’re into wild swimming, or you can head to the Base Nautique d’Artignosc (10 minutes’ drive) to hire a canoe or paddleboard.
Back on site, the modern toilet/shower block (with facilities for disabled guests) is the place to get ready for the evening ahead. Maybe you fancy a quick game of pétanque before hitting the restaurant (renowned for its delicious – and loaded – pizzas). Or perhaps you’d rather buy what you need for your barbecue at the on-site grocery shop ahead of an evening of musical entertainment or an astronomy class.

Local attractions
Dioramas, lifesize furry mammoths and other prehistoric creatures, and a reconstructed ancient village are all part of the Museum of Prehistory of the Gorges du Verdon (five minutes’ drive), as is the Baume Bonne cave, which can be reached on foot (from the museum) in just over an hour.
Drive to Lake Sainte-Croix (20 minutes), stopping first at the romantically named Plage de l’Amour for a dip, before continuing to the watersports centre on the eastern shore. If paddleboarding is too tame for you, you can have a go at a tandem paragliding flight at Parapente Verdon Roc n’ Vol.
Spend a day in Aix-en-Provence (an hour and 20 minutes), exploring the art at the Musée Granet (including a collection of paintings by local boy Cezanne) or checking out the kinetic installations at the Fondation Vasarely. Feeling lazy? The Petit Train takes you on a 45-minute tour of the city.
