Although you won't have to venture off site if you don't want to, donning threads and getting out into the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence landscape surrounding Camping Castillon de Provence is hugely recommended, as day trips of all flavours are all around in the Gorges du Verdon and teeny Provencal towns. Have a roam around local town Castellane, set high up with spectacular valley views and the chapel of Notre-Dame du Roc overlooking the town from even higher up, and then buy lunch at its old market to have back by the lake or as a pitstop when tackling the GR 4 hiking trail that passes through the town. Other active options (all sort of a must) are rafting or kayaking on the waters of the Gorges du Verdon, paragliding above it and hiking round it and – most definitely worth getting off site for – swimming with horses in the beaut blue Lac de Castillon.
