Spacious pitches

General

  • Peaceful setting in the Marais Poitevin
  • Under 45 minutes' drive from La Rochelle
  • Pool, playground, fishing and restaurant

Prepare your paddling arm: Camping l'Île Cariot is in the Marais Poitevin, the second biggest wetland in western France: here you can/certainly should take a canoe out, or a kayak, or perhaps just relinquish the paddle and allow yourself to drift dreamily down its waters on a guided flat-bottomed boat…

Camping l'Île Cariot is a friendly and easy-going site, in a peaceful place about 20 kilometres from the beaches and watersports of the Atlantic coast, and 40 minutes' drive from the smashing port city of La Rochelle. Countryside and coast activities like fishing, hiking, riverside cycling and birdwatching are all around in the surrounding area.

Among the many facilities on site are a heated pool with a shallow pool for kids (open from June to September), a food shop, a playground, a pétanque court, a TV room and a restaurant. Fishing is also available on site.

The site also has shower and toilet blocks, disabled facilities and a launderette. Free wifi is available.

Please note

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 15/06 and 15/09 (subject to weather conditions).

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Absolutely everything is great. If you need something they have it recycling bins washing up areas shower is electric and they even lend me a adapter.

And everything works. It’s very Rurel and very wild but at the same time the campsite is organised with defined little pitch area is bounded by trees so you have privacy and you can get next door for a chat with the neighbours.

I love this place it’s great

    Disliked:

Almost nothing. I guess that if they pitch areas had more grass it would be better but they are a bit dry but what can you do the sun is very hot.

Ideal stopover site for South West of France from Cherbourg or Roscoff08/03/2020

I liked the French atmosphere and swimming pool along with convenience to the motorway. The pitch was a good size for a small tent with my two boys but I’d have struggled with it had I been there for two weeks in my extra large family tent. The staff were very pleasant and helpful. I would suggest this site as being ideal for a stopover for a couple of nights or for a small family seeking a longer stay textbook French campsite who will day trip into La Rochelle. It is a gentle walk to a little supermarket which also has some cafe bars and a pizzeria. After a day trip out teenagers and younger children could spend an evening in the ample sized park and playground. Happy to recommend it and will likely return.

    Disliked:

Cars being parked near pitches as no dedicated car park. Toilets were small.

The villages close by were very nice and was a great location to visit La Rochelle and surrounding areas.

    Disliked:

The noise level on our first night. An organised evening meal and activity (Karaoke) went on past mid-night with amplified music and singing. Had to help my children to put in ear plugs to block out the sound for them to get to sleep.

There were only two women's toilets for the whole site - I imagine at peak season this could cause huge problems. One washing machine and the free Wifi was only available in one place, at the bar terrace.

Nice pool but gets too busy with villagers being allowed to use the pool after 3pm until 7pm, particularly as the teenage boys were very rough and boisterous and it wasn't suitable for smaller children to be in the pool without accident.

Local attractions

Whether your tastes are ticked by a peaceful stroll along country lanes, a whirl around lively La Rochelle, gently stalking local wildlife or basking on the beaches of the southern Vendée, Camping l'Île Cariot is well placed for weeks' worth of active and chilled out days. The famed old abbey buildings of Maillezais, Nieul sur l’Autise and Saint Michel en l’Herm are also within easy reach.

Boats of all sorts should be investigated around here too, first up with a canal trip along the rivers of the Marais Poitevin, then with a lazy afternoon being rowed around the Venise Verte, the marshland crisscrossed with teeny canals. Or take the binoculars to the wetlands of La Baie de l’Aiguillon Natural Park, home and migratory stopoff to thousands of wading birds and waterfowl.

Just along the coast, have city days out at Fontenay le Comte and La Rochelle.
