  • Peaceful site between Vernantes and Mouliherne in the Forêt de Monnaie
  • Less than half an hour from Saumur and the Loire river
  • Communal barbecue area, well-equipped kitchen and smart bathrooms
Four acres of family-friendly space flanked by fields and forest – how fab. Quiet rural site Camping La Fortinerie is a family-run place on the edge of the Forêt de Monnaie, with heaps of space but only a handful of guests on site at any one time to preserve the peace. And how even more fab – Saumur is less than half an hour away by car for when you fancy breaking away from the woodsy surrounds for days meandering around the medieval château, taking in a show at Le Cadre Noir, paddling along the Loire or sampling the town’s array of sparkling wines. You’ll not need to stray all that way for food though, for there are supermarkets, butchers, bakers and the like in the nearby villages of Vernantes and Mouliherne, and plenty of local markets to poke about in. Supplies sorted, you’re keenly encouraged to spend a chilled-out evening on site cooking on the communal barbecue and sipping something from one of the area’s wineries. Should you wish to retreat indoors to prep your meals, it’s a short stroll to the well-equipped kitchen (with microwave, oven, fridge-freezer, crockery, pans and the like); it’s also here that you’ll be able to freshen up your togs with the laundry facilities. As for freshening up yourself, that’s easily sorted in the smart shared bathrooms, which are kitted out with rain showers, mirrors and power sockets for your beautifying gadgets.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Beautiful, peaceful site in the middle of the forest. Large area for motorhome pitches with plenty of room to spread yourselves out. Great kitchen for everyone to use with delicious vegetables and herbs growing in the garden which you are welcome to help yourself to. Beautiful fully fitted bathrooms, lovely and clean - just like a home from home! Lots of lovely areas around the campsite to relax, BBQ or just chill out in hammocks, hanging chairs etc. Very peaceful and full of wildlife. We loved listening to the stags roaring in the evenings and the owls hooting at night and seeing the chickens roaming freely around the site. Thank you Tina and Julian, you are great hosts, happy to go above and beyond to help your guests and we’ll definitely be back if we pass this way again.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike!

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: We loved everything about this beautifully landscaped and maintained haven in the forest, but close to all the hi lights of this popular tourist area. Different garden areas offer shade, tranquility and sunset views and pitches are huge. Tina and Julian are delightful hosts, funny ,warm and very approachable and nothing is too much trouble for them. Chickens wander in to the awning but never intrude and provide delicious eggs. Tina has a beautiful garden and encourages guests to help themselves to produce The herb garden is the most diverse I have ever seen. Dark skies provide a beautiful starscape and great bat watching opportunities, and owls and deer can often be heard close by. There are lovely walks and cycling opportunities in the quiet lanes all around the site. And the bathrooms wouldn't disgrace a boutique luxury hotel. A truly amazing place to stay!

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Fabulous small, peaceful site close to Saumur. Tina and Julian were perfect hosts, the vegetable plot with seasonal produce was lovely and the fresh eggs from freely roaming hens were a delight. Great chilling out areas with a fire pit if needed, all well kept and maintained, toilet and bathroom facilities spotlessly cleaned with personal touches, kitchen with anything you may need or have forgotten! Highly recommend this beautiful little site.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Small, peaceful, friendly site. Large level pitches, partly shaded. The best showers we've ever seen on a campsite - individual rooms beautifully finished. Great outbuilding converted into kitchen, laundry etc with everything you could need. The grounds are very pretty with veggie patch to help yourself, herb gardens, chickens (eggs to use if available), chill out area with swinging day bed and water features, sculpture garden (owners own pieces of work) and mist shower, hammocks and tree swings dotted about. I almost don't want to write an honest review because I feel like we have stumbled across a hidden gem and we want to keep it just for us but, the site deserves praise - it's really lovely. Loads to do in the area too.

Disliked: Nothing at all.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: What a wonderful 2 weeks we had at La Fortinerie in 'Hector', our vintage caravan. Tina and Julian were fantastic hosts. You couldn't hope to meet a nicer, friendlier or more helpful couple. The site itself is set in lovely, peaceful woodland and has everything you need as well as lots of little extra's such as hammocks, a large outdoor raised double bed for relaxing, fresh veggies from their own plot, fresh eggs from the chickens that roam the site and lots more. On one night Tina cooked a risotto over the fire-pit for everyone to get together and enjoy which was lovely. All the facilities are excellent and kept spotlessly clean and there is a lot of attention paid to detail which shows how much Tina and Julian care about what they do. This really is a peaceful, tranquil site in a beautiful setting which we can't recommend highly enough. All being well, we'll be back next year for a longer stay. Rich, Jo and Charlie

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Beautiful tranquil site surrounded by nature. Not many pitches so very personal and all played games in the evening by the camp fire. Made to feel very welcome by the hosts. The kids loved the 'mist stage' and we all enjoyed the hammocks and the campfire (which Tina lit for us and provided marshmallows). Very clean and homely facilities. It was great using the kitchen for cooking too. Will definitely be returning when next in France! Thank you!

Local attractions

It’s well worth making the half-hour car journey to Saumur for a day trip, wandering round its château and taking your place in the audience for the military horse shows at the famed Le Cadre Noir. If you’ve a little more time, you may like to know that the town’s also home to a tank museum, a mushroom museum and several places that you can hire canoes for a Loire-based paddle. Time for a glass of vino? Saumur’s the place for those who favour bubbles; there are plenty of fab places to take a winery tour and pick up a bottle or two around Angers (45 minutes’ drive away) as well. For an insight into how different folks lived their lives, pay a visit to the troglodyte village 40 minutes away at Rochemenier or wander round the rather fancier digs at Château de Montgeoffroy or Château de Gizeux. Should the tiddlers tire of history, there’s an excellent zoo in Doué-la-Fontaine.
