Camping La Clairière: Set up among the trees

General

  • Peaceful site in the Ariège Pyrénées Regional Nature Park
  • Hiking, biking, gliding and climbing within 10 minutes’ drive
  • Well placed for exploring medieval Cathar castles

If someone asked you to pick the word that describes you best, would it be adventurer? Adrenaline-junkie? If either suits, then a stay at Camping La Clairière, a family-friendly site 10 minutes’ drive from the town of Foix in the Ariège region of the south of France, is an absolute must.

On the edge of the Ariège Pyrénées Regional Nature Park, La Clairière is in a prime spot for exploration and adventure: don your walking boots or hire a bike on site to follow the hiking routes and marked trails (including the long-distance Cathar Trail) close by, or try out rock climbing, hang gliding, canoeing, rafting, canyoning and paragliding, all within about 10 minutes' drive.

Looking for something different? Talk to the La Clairière team, who’ll be more than happy to help you organise and book a tailormade tour around the mountains, lakes and rivers of the region.

When you get back to base, it’s time to take off your adventurer’s hat and relax – select a bit of riverbank (a stream flows through La Clairière) and fetch your rod and reel, or just kick back in the peace and quiet of the tree-filled site. Once you’re ready to eat, you can fire up the barbecue (you might even be lucky enough to have freshly-caught fish to grill) or head to one of the restaurants within 15 minutes of the site, before spending your evening chilling out next to the campfire.

Please note

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Local attractions

When you think of French hols, château visits may be the first thing to come to mind. Camping La Clairière is well-placed for visiting the châteaux of the Ariège, starting with the scenic Château de Foix, a medieval Cathar Castle on a rocky outcrop 10 minutes’ drive from the site. Half an hour in the car will bring you to the ruins of châteaux Roquefixade and Montségur, and 45 minutes gets you to Château de Lordat and its bird of prey shows.

If Lordat has whetted your appetite for animal-focused excursions, there’s plenty nearby to keep you fluttering with excitement. Visit Les Papillons d’Amarante to walk among exotic butterflies, meet the snakes and tortoises at the Bastide-de-Sérou reptile farm, take a guided tour of La Ferme aux Bisons, or have a howlingly good time at La Maison des Loups, all within around an hour of La Clairière.

There’s a lot to do above ground in the Ariège, but diving below the surface is still a must: less than 45 minutes from the site, follow the underground river at Labouiche to the stunning waterfall at its end, explore the massive caves at Mas d’Azil or experience the spectacular cave paintings in the Grotte de Niaux by torchlight.
