  • Family-friendly site near Langres and the Land of Four Lakes
  • Peaceful and green setting with flowers and plenty of space
  • Restaurant with local cuisine and shop with local beer, wine and honey
A Langres land of lovely lakes… with accompanying watersports galore. Waterskiing, wakeboarding, canoeing and fishing are among the array of watery options from Camping Hautoreille, in the 'Land of Four Lakes' of Charmes, Liez, Mouche and Vingeanne. And… you'll likely need to be active to burn off all le cuisine and plonk. Camping Hautoreille's setting near the village of Bannes in the Haute-Marne region is in the Champagne-Ardenne region, one of the many (many) parts of France stuffed with cheese and wine producers: sample some at the on-site mini market which sells local wine and cheese as well as other local products including beer and honey, and bread in high season. You can eat pitchside or fire up a barbie, or trundle along to the popular bar-restaurant for regional specialities; brekkie and takeaway are available from here too. And among all that? This is a lush and peaceful setting, in green surrounds with flowers and shrubs placed prettily about. There's plenty of space to wander; countryside walks are easy to access, and bike hire is available if you want to venture further (the famed old fortified town of Langres is seven kilometres away). Site facilities include a playground, table tennis, pétanque court and free wifi; the washrooms have hot showers, accessible facilities, a baby bathroom and kids' area with small toilets, and are heated in the colder months.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Open locasie, groene vergezichten.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Pretty campsite but cool showers and lack of hot water for washing up. Self check computerised entry system tricky for a lot of people.

Disliked: Not many level pitches so tricky for motor homes.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Peaceful site, good price. Good location for return journey from the South to Calais.

Disliked: I booked with Pitch-Up, great price, and paid a small deposit. I noted that check-in was up until 10pm and reception was open till 8pm. We arrived at 7.15pm, the site has a barrier and payment machine. I was given 3 options, which included existing booking & new booking. I selected 'existing booking', where it asked for an ID code, the Pitch-Up reference I had didn't match, and the only other option was for a new booking, which would not deduct the deposit already paid. I went to reception to query, but this was closed, a gentleman from the restaurant (next door to the reception), advised I must do a new booking and I would receive my 15% Pitch-up deposit back. According to the Pitch-Up website, Reception is open 4pm 8pm and we were leaving early the next day. We went to the Restaurant Bar and they refunded the small deposit. A few suggestions (which would have made our booking and stay easier), it would have been easier if the booking linked to the payment machine system (possibly email a follow up booking and advise of the ID reference). Site plan leaflet available as part of the machine system (or next to the machine, or clearer instructions), we noted the board on display after we had gone through the gates and located a pitch (with the limited access to electric plug-in points, we changed pitch to ensure we could easily access one of the points, otherwise our cable wouldn't have been long enough). Hot tap is located over the draining board, fit a hose adaptor that enables you to fill the bowel in the sink (husband is a plumber, and he's never come across this set-up, which just didn't make sense). Provide toilet seats for comfort. More hooks in showers (noted disabled hooks are over the toilet, not the best location). Please improve the signage, the Entry and Exit are the same location (which isn't stated and map shows another road, which leads to a roundabout, but the gates are locked).

Liked: The friendly staff and beautiful location. The campsite beautifully kept and the pitches were of all sizes. The staff were very helpful especially as we don’t speak much French. A lovely little restaurant as well. A nice little play area. Loved it all.

Local attractions

Get ready to sail, swim, canoe, hike or horse ride off all that wine et cheese, at the many outdoor options available locally in the region's four lakes. The closest to the site is Charmes three kilometres away, where you can hire canoes and pedaloes, have a dip, or decide not to be active at all actually, and contemplate the waters from the end of a fishing rod. More swimming, along with waterskiing, wakeboarding and sailing, can be plunged into at Lac de la Liez five kilometres away, the biggest in the region (and again, if you don't want to be active at all thanks, there's fishing for pike and carp, lazy lakeside walks and a sandy beach all to hand here too). The lake at Vingeanne, 20 kilometres away, is a famed birdwatching spot, and Mouche along with Liez and Vingeanne has a hiking route around its scenic shores. Townwise, the fortified hillside settlement of Langres, seven kilometres away, is a popular stopoff in the area, for its cathedral, Navarre Tower and several other ancient sights. You should also walk the town ramparts, three and a half kilometres' worth including seven fortified towers and seven gateways (some sections of the ramparts are over 2,000 years old). Within 20 killometres, more history is at the Château du Pailly, said to be the best example of Renaissance architecture in the Champagne-Ardenne, and at the Faverolles Gallo-Roman mausoleum, built in 20BC… even the kids should like this one. There's also horse riding and a treetop adventure park within 15 kilometres, or you could stick around Langres and enthusiastically sample the town's AOC cheese: best to hike around the ramparts afterwards to burn it all off.
