- Small family-run campsite in the peaceful Normandy countryside
- Fougères 35 minutes' drive; Saint-Malo an hour and 20 minutes
- Stargazing paradise with telescope hire available
Lush green scenes, flower meadows and apple trees… that’s the spell of La Maison Magique, a family-run site surrounded by the Normandy countryside, where you can relax and unwind while the wildlife does its thing. As well as the greenery on all sides, vast dark night skies are what this place is all about (good news if you're especially interested in that, as telescope hire is available).
This little countryside oasis is close to the border with Brittany, so it’s well-suited to laidback trips out in the back of beyond, with far-reaching views over the fields that stretch on and on.
The small village of Buais-Les-Monts is about a kilometre and a half away and has amenities like a bar and church, while the nearest town of Saint-Hilaire-du-Harcouët is a 10-minute drive down the road (head here for a supermarket, a covered market and a post office – easy for the essentials).
These spacious pitches have access to a communal chill-out zone, a look-out point, a shared firepit and a barbecue area. Other amenities include toilets and showers in a converted barn, a freezer, phone charging stations and a family shower room. And if you're planning on bringing the dog along, well-behaved pets are welcome at La Maison Magique too.

Local attractions
When it comes to water-based action, you may have to do a coin toss between Genêts (45 minutes’ drive) and La Ferté-Macé (45 minutes). On the one hand, you’ve got sandy beaches, and on the other the lake’s big buzz (for watersports, including windsurfing, canoeing and kayaking).
There’s a pretty imposing sight in Domfront (25 minutes). It’s a medieval fortified town, towered over by a large castle. It’s certainly up there in competition with Fougères (35 minutes), which has a grand castle of its own – and an old and new town too.
Classed a UNESCO World Heritage site, Mont Saint-Michel (55 minutes) is another big sight to see – a tidal island topped with a huge abbey. Also by the ocean, Saint-Malo (an hour and 20 minutes) has an old town with Romanesque and Gothic features.
Once you’re done with the big-shot historical sites, a slightly calmer time may be in store in Bagnoles-de-l'Orne (40 minutes). This is a spa town, after all, so the hype here is all about its thermal spa (the only one in northwestern France, by the way) or gentle days beside the river. Similarly, Dragey-Ronthon’s (50 minutes) sand dunes make a nice refuge by the sea.
