Active hols started on site can continue within easy reach – it’s less than half a kilometre from base to Parc de Loisirs du Four, where guests can swing about treetop courses, test strength on the climbing wall, and putt about on the miniature golf course, and a skatepark and golf course are handily close at hand too. When gazing across Arcachon Basin is inspiring thoughts of exploration, travel post haste to Bélisaire (15 minutes’ drive away) to make the 30-minute ferry crossing to Arcachon, where visitors have Victorian-style houses to view, oyster bars and seafood restaurants to frequent, and an aquarium to wander about. If travelling outside Arcachon is feasible, make Aqualand Bassin d’Arcachon waterpark, the Arcachon zoo and Dune de Pilat – the highest sand dune in Europe, with fab views and, at its foot, a host of bars and restaurants – absolute priorities. Venturing in the other direction, travel north to the Lacanau Océan resort (45 minutes) – Europe’s oldest surf club, home to surf schools and an annual pro competition – or make the hour’s drive to the spectacular city of Bordeaux for boat trips on the Garonne, châteaux, gardens and plenty of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
