Does getaway for you mean a remote spot in a nature-filled spot far from ‘civilisation’, with nothing to shatter the peace but the sounds of birds flapping overhead and calling from the trees? Pile everyone into the car and make your way to Woodlands Fishin Resort, a family-friendly site in the Chilcotin, British Columbia. On the shores of Puntzi Lake, the site is well set-up for days spent unwinding by the lakeside, listening to the water gently lapping, appreciating spectacular sunrises, watching bald eagles soar through the skies and gazing at the only nesting population of American white pelicans in British Columbia. And it’s not just avian passers-by that will catch the eye… The site gets regular visits from some of the locals – the deer, bears and wild horses that call the Chilcotin home. Hoping for a bit more activity? This is a must-visit spot for fishing: the lake is well populated with rainbow trout and Kokanee, rods are available for hire (as are boats and motors, for anyone with a boater’s license), a private boat launch gets guests out on the water quickly, and a fish-cleaning station makes prepping fish for breakfast, lunch and dinner an absolute cinch. Speaking of food, the site has a source handily close by… The on-site bakery and café is chock-full of bread, cakes, pastries and other sweet treats – one of the site's owners, Colleen, particularly recommends her carrot cake and cinnamon buns – and a menu of burgers, fries, soups and salads should suit the more savoury minded.

Local attractions

When it’s time to start exploring, there’s no need to venture too far right away. A handful of nature trails start directly from the site, and the site team is more than happy to help guests arrange trail and lake expeditions, off-site horse riding excursions and hours spent on ATVs. If a little more independence is sought for wide-ranging adventures, make tracks for any of the scenic valleys (relatively) nearby. An hour’s drive will land guests at Bull Canyon for lengthy rambles along the spectacularly green Chilcotin river, and the stunning Tatlayoko valley and lake are an hour and 10 minutes from base. More far flung is Farwell Canyon, but the two hour and 20 minute jaunt may be worth it for the hikes along sand dunes and the oh-so-pretty views. For those lucky enough to be travelling onwards, the site is roughly midway between the scenic mountain-bound town of Bella Coola and the city of Williams Lake, both a little under three hours away. If even farther is acceptable, the city of Prince George and its science museum, winery and casino are five hours and 20 minutes from base.
