  • Leafy park with barbecue areas and walking trails through rainforest
  • Under three hours' drive from Rio' less than 30 minutes to waterfalls
  • Sports ground, library, shop, guitar, kitchen and a Zen Area for yoga
Want to wake up in the wilderness in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro state? Stick a stay at Camping Toca da Onça on the itinerary, a prime spot for guests aiming to spend a hol surrounded by tropical birds in a leafy area, with fireflies flitting around the sky at dusk while they sit around and gorge on grub... For eats, barbecues are available on site, so visitors can go back to basics with their cooking after watching the sunset from a lookout point beside the park. But no worries if grilling’s not for you: a shared kitchen means you can whip up meals the usual way as well. For activities in between meals, a grassy sports ground, trampoline and a natural swimming pool are on site, and guests can set off on a 14-kilometre long hike to the famed Encontro dos Rios waterfalls (or simply drive the 25-minute route by car) if trekking appeals. Tours available too, like adventurous 4x4 rides through the jungle landscape towards a natural beach edging clear water to swim in. On their return, the Zen Area is just the place for quieter times, with a Swiss ball handy for practising pilates as well as mats for meditating and yoga. And other extras on base? A guitar, library and wifi are on hand, as well as taps filled with mineral water and a mini market to stock up at.

Local attractions

This park’s in a rural area, with biking and hiking paths straight from the gate. To journey towards splashy sights instead, guests can drive to the Poço Feio natural swimming pools, 20 minutes away, then head a little further north (35 minutes) for treks to the Indiana Jones waterfall through rocky ravines and past dangling vines. More of an urbanite? The mountain town of Nova Friburgo (50 minutes) has old buildings in the Praça do Suspiro square; a little further to the east are Swiss-themed experiences in the Casa Suíça cultural centre (an hour and 10 minutes away) for something a bit more out of the ordinary... If you're hoping to carve out a little time on your trip for the state’s capital, Rio de Janeiro two hours and 50 minutes away is a place where sipping caipirinhas on busy beaches, taking cable cars up to Sugarloaf Mountain for smashing views and shopping in the fancy boutiques of Ipanema is par for the course. If nightlife’s needed after digital detoxes in the jungle, you can also samba with the locals in the downtown area of Lapa.
