General
- Pub site a mile from Haverfordwest and five miles from the coast
- Folly Farm, Oakwood Theme Park and Heatherton within 30 minutes' drive
- Excellent amenities; restaurant on site with home-cooked meals
Looking for a pretty pub site in Pembrokeshire close to Blue Flag beaches, a stroll from the Pembrokeshire capital and with the potential for squealy good times at three local theme parks? House your little animals at The Rising Sun Touring Caravan Park and Campsite, only a mile from Haverfordwest, five miles from a stretch of perfectly sandy Pembrokeshire beach and with Folly Farm, Oakwood Theme Park and Heatherton all within a half hour drive.
The site attached to this traditional and very friendly family-run pub and restaurant has just a handful of pitches over its scenic and well maintained two and a half acres, set between the inn on one side and a brook on the other. Standards are kept sky high for the facilities including refurbished shower and loo block: the staff say that some guests have called this the best campsite shower in Wales, so we recommend happily singing numbers from The Animals and their contemporaries as you lather up.
The Rising Sun has another soaring reputation for quality and good value home-cooked meals using locally sourced produce wherever possible, in a newly refurbished restaurant with adjoining lounge bar with Freeview.

Local attractions
Theme parks, beaches, castles, coast surfing, sailing, fishing, history and heritage are on the doorstep in almost every part of Pembrokeshire – the county has over 50 castles and 50 beaches, hundreds of miles to walk on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path and gardens, multiple museums and a good cluster of islands for sightseeing and birdwatching. Tenby is about 20 miles from the site and Pembrokeshire’s county town Haverfordwest a mile away with an award-winning farmers’ market, riverside walks and plenty of shops, restaurants and cafés.
Sand fans will find acres of beaches to pick from in the area whether they want to carefully craft sandcastles or get active with surfing, swimming, boating, kayaking or kite surfing: Pembrokeshire has more Blue Flag beaches than anywhere else in the country and the several sandy beaches – and exceptional fishing – of St Brides Bay are only about five miles from the Rising Sun Inn (beaut beaches, places to eat, small villages and means for boat hire are dotted all along the Pembrokeshire coast if you want to venture further). The wide sandy beach of Druidston Haven is the closest to the site and allows dogs all year; your mutt’s spirits will rise high indeed.
Near St Brides Bay, take a boat out to Skomer Island from the tiny National Trust-managed village of Martin Haven or the fishing village of Dale for the spectacular and screechy spectacle of hundreds of thousands of chattering birds; Skomer is a National Nature Reserve and is crammed with seabirds such as guillemots, razorbills, the biggest collection of puffins in southern Britain and half the world’s population of Manx Shearwaters. Also look out for inhabitants like the unique Skomer vole, glow worms and seals sunning themselves on the nearby rocks, and for peregrine falcons and kestrels overhead.
The teeny city of St Davids is 14 miles from the Rising Sun and twitchers can access Ramsey Island from here, an RSPB reserve with thousands more seabirds to see; if this might make you a bit board, one of the best surfing beaches in the country is two miles along the coast at Whitesands Bay.
