Ginger Hill

We didn't stay there in the end. The owner had started the refurbishment of the hardstanding pitches and the main field was too boggy to stay in. We didn't feel comfortable staying on the hardstanding pitches because it was messy with building materials lying around so we decided to move on elsewhere. The owner returned our full payment without any quibbles and asked us for our feedback and opinions. He was a nice man and assured us the site would be looking great at the start of next season. I have no doubt that it will, but the site should have been closed prior to refurbishment and they should not have taken our booking or warned us prior to arrival to give us an opportunity to book elsewhere. Which fortunately we we able to but it was very last minute.

The fact that the site was being refurbished (although near the end of the season the site should have been closed) and the area was untidy because of this. Please see liked section of review.

• Quiet & close to town
• Good water pressure & temperature
• Paved area between toilet, shower & kitchen was well laid out & clean
• Access to electricity worked fine

Unfortunately we found this site very disappointing. For example
• toilet & shower facilities were filthy. They did not appear to be cleaned once during our 3 night visit. In 1 toilet the floor had collapsed and there was a pool of water in the gap.
• the shower walls were mouldy
• Fly screens in the shower block we’re broken
• kitchen worktops, drainage units and drip trays were dirty & had dead flies accumulating
• fridge was filthy inside & out
• rubbish collection area was disgusting. I didn’t want to touch the handles on the bin
• access from the pitch to the facilities was like a mud bath.
We appreciate that it had been wet but there was no attempt to make it usable. For example gravel laid down for paths and drainage.
• the hard standing pitch was just big enough for our motorhome
• there were a number of areas that had been ploughed and left as clods of earth
• electric supply to the site was laid across access roads covered by rubber mats
• no grey water drainage point that we could find
• we paid a compulsory £10 Membership fee for Greener Camping Club. No idea what qualified this site for this apart from the green mould in the showers

Great campsite with fishing lakes and brilliant scenery. Really friendly owners.

A great site and a very idyllic setting. The weather was a challenge but the owner was very thoughtful and attentive making sure we were all fine. We had a great week and will definitely be returning. Thanks Ginger Hill

The showers could be temperamental but we got the hang of them over the week. The toilet block got muddy quite quickly but this was due to the weather and they were regularly cleaned.

The rural location peace and quiet

Rained all week so was like a bog,toilets unclean they aren't cleaned just hosed out with a hose no bleach disinfectants used use the toilets and Russian roulette your not ill

That there was lots of different areas for you to pitch your tent, owner was very friendly and helpful.

The facilities could do with a little update, but reasonable for the price.

We stayed in a lovely large field, right at the end with a nice view of the pond

Great central location
Very relaxed atmosphere

Facilities were a little rough and ready but only because of the wet weather conditions, meaning mud was tracked into the toilets but it can't be helped
Shower pressure wasn't great when they were busy

The friendliness of other campers.

Firstly, I emailed the the team with a change prior to our stay and never received a response.

When we arrived on the Friday night the site was like a quagmire. We had travelled for over 4 hours to get to the site. Cars had to be abandoned or towed by a tractor to their pitch. I only saw one person during our short stay and it appeared to be a one-man operation. Based on the state of the site I would have expected a phone call to advise that the site was not really fit to be camped on. I understand that these are difficult times but would have expected to be treated in a more professional manner.

Really pretty campsite with lakes and wildlife.
Richard was very accommodating and made sure to check in on us during our stay.
Able to have open fires which was welcomed on a cold bank holiday weekend.
Fab time eventhough it was muddy!
