General
- Quiet countryside park next to Llandovery RFC rugby union club
- Just outside the Brecon Beacons and a 10-minute walk into Llandovery
- Clubhouse open for food and drink Thursday to Sunday evenings
If your fondness for rugby is matched only by your devotion to dawdling, Llandovery Caravan and Camping Park could be the Carmarthenshire site for you. Sitting just outside the Brecon Beacons National Park – for walks in Welsh wilderness – this place is attached to Llandovery RFC rugby union club.
Even if you’re not a fan of the game, the site makes a brill base for tackling the treks in south Wales’ most scenic area. It’s also niftily located – the grounds are about 10 minutes’ stroll via a flat route into Llandovery town for pubs, shops, a public pool, a theatre and a heritage centre with tourist information on the Brecon Beacons and the surrounding area.
Info collected, venture into the national park for watery hikes around Llyn y Fan Fach, home to the legend of the Lady of the Lake (40 minutes’ drive), stopping by the Red Kite Feeding Station (20 minutes) on the way to see these winged creatures that have made a welcome comeback after almost becoming extinct.
Closer to home, the River Tywi – the longest river inside Wales and a top spot for salmon fishing – is a few minutes’ walk away, while further afield are historical spots like the Talley Abbey ruins (25 minutes) and Carreg Cennen Castle (35 minutes). Places of a cultural nature are in Llandeilo, like the National Trust’s Dinefwr Park and Castle and the Newton House art museum and gallery (both around 15 minutes’ drive).
Pick up a pint and some food at the rugby club (open between Thursday evenings and Sunday evenings) while the kids race around the play area. Other amenities on site include showers and toilets, disabled facilities, free wifi, chemical disposal, a launderette and a washing-up area.

Local attractions
Wales is quite the adventure hub – if you want to get in on some of the action, try the Raven mountain biking trail at Brechfa Forest 35 minutes’ drive away from the park.
Quieter times can be had at the National Botanic Garden of Wales (about 40 minutes away), to check out the world's biggest single-span glasshouse, or while birdwatching at the RSPB Gwenffrwd-dinas. Or learn about the country's past at the Roman-era Dolaucothi Gold Mine where you can pan for precious minerals and tour the site (20 minutes’ drive).
The hides at the latter centre are up near stunning Llyn Brianne Dam & Reservoir (25 minutes’ drive from the site): follow up sightings of red kites et al with a trip to see the water rushing down the spillway when the reservoir is full.
