General

  • Peaceful, cosy and fully-equipped shepherd's hut in a wildlife haven
  • Surrounded by woodland, streams and river with its own private garden
  • Spectacular sunsets and stargazing 25 minutes from the coast

Mosey along to Carmarthenshire to say a merry hi to Morris. And make plenty of time too for the many – many – things to see and do around this part of west Wales: you can be out and about here for weeks.

Morris The Shepherd's Hut is a comfy and cosy hut half a mile from Gelliwen, among lush wooded scenery surrounded by woodland, streams and a river. It's fully equipped for self-catering stays, with a kitchen and dining area, outdoor seating, a multi-fuel burner, a shower and toilet, and a bedroom with double bed and electric blanket.

Also at your disposal is a private, secluded garden with an arbour, seating, a barbecue, a picnic bench and a bee and butterfly box. The site is a wildlife haven, with owl boxes dotted around (keep an eye out for the resident tawny owl), buzzards, red kites and sparrowhawks soaring above, foxes and rabbits in the local lanes – the very keen of eye might see otters in the river too…

Bring your camera along, as this is a region of spectacular sunsets and clear stargazing nights, where the Plough and the Milky Way shine brightly overhead and where shooting stars are regularly visible. Around the area, Morris is 25 to 45 minutes from seaside resorts and beaches, in a land of riverside and woodland walks, wildlife parks and local chocolate and cheese factories, all about 45 minutes' drive from Swansea.

Car parking is available on site. For the essentials, a cashpoint is at St Clears, 10 minutes' drive away, and cosy cottage pubs are at Meidrim and Trelech, five and 10 minutes away.

Im impressed. I was looking for peace and seclusion and in 'Morris' that's exactly what I found, although in my case my plans for a couple of treks ended up forgotten. I ended up up taking some walks along the nearby lanes but found that I was in the perfect spot for recharging batteries, finally leaving for home completely refreshed.
It's the perfect spot for one or two people to stay, tranquil and surrounded by nature. As for the cabin itself, in the guestbooks the word cosy is mentioned a few times, and that's the description I'll also go with. Apart from an oven, not enough room, everything you could need is provided. Welcome pack included.
An efficient log burner, I found that three logs one after another, was enough to leave the hut very comfortable for at least two or three hours. The shower, was spacious enough for a six footer and had an ideal water temperature and flow. Glamping without having to leave the accommodation to go to an outside shower block, is a nice bonus. As for the sleeping area, it's like a nest, tv and dvd's for when you're not sleeping and an ideal site for reading. The garden area is also a nice place to sit out in, and when clear, it's a beautiful night sky to take in.
Finally, the owners are a nice couple, very friendly and helpful and extremely unobtrusive. I only saw them on the afternoon that I arrived and the morning that I left. Apart from the small amount of traffic it felt like I was the only person alive, perfect. Nice little decorative touches from Frances to make Morris more homely should also be mentioned.
All in all a great place for those looking for a nice peaceful break from civilisation.

Very friendly hosts, no near neighbours so very peaceful-perfect for what we wanted. There was a lovely welcome pack and they had lit the fire to warm the place through. Clean and tidy and they even had a games draw for entertainment, along with plenty of choice of dvd's as no tv signal, which we were aware of before we travelled. Definitely a place where we will return to

I have never stayed anywhere that was so well equipped. I don't think there was one thing that wasn't thought about. The welcome pack covered every possible breakfast need, Welsh cakes, cheese, bread rolls, bread for toast, a spread, jam marmite, peanut butter, porridge, cereals, milk, fruit, baked beans. There were also other edibles, condiments and so on. Bill and his wife give a very thorough intro to everything and were extremely helpful. I don't know what else to say really apart from what a well thought out place this is to stay that leaves you needing nothing apart from a main meal and even then there is an extensive list of local eateries. If I could have given it 6 stars I would have.

The location was perfect. 'Morris' was a little hideaway and felt very far away from the hustle and bustle of modern life. The lack of phone signal and Wi-Fi did not bother us as it was part of the reason we were able to completely unwind while we were away, and you are not too far away from 'civilisation' if you need to use google maps or research the local area.

We got a genuinely warm welcome from Frances and Bill, and Felicity had kept in touch via text regarding our arrival, which helped us to relax in our new surroundings. The hut had everything you needed, was cosy and comfortable and we slept really well with only the wildlife and stream running in the background.

We were really lucky with the weather and so didn't need to make use of the log burner or the wonderful rain ponchos, but we were glad they were there just in case. The hut is close to Pendine Sands, which was the first beach we visited, but you are also quite close to the Pembrokeshire coast so are spoiled for choice when it comes to places to visit. There are plenty of great places to eat in the local are too, to suit every budget - the hosts have provided a lot of useful information to help you get started.

    Disliked:

Heavier curtains might have been a good idea, as there are a lot of windows. I think 'Morris' would suit a nice sage green ;) However, there was nothing disliked and this is just a suggestion. As it's pretty secluded you do get shade from the trees.

From the manager...

Thank you for your lovely review ,it was a pleasure hosting you both, and having a lovely chat , hope to see you again one day . It was much appreciated to find "Morris" had been left so clean and tidy ,thank you .To be enviromentally friendly ,we opted for cedar cladding which has it's own natural oils and it blends right into the surrounding woodland .I wanted the inside to be light and airy and heavier curtains spoil that look ,no one overlooks the hut or can see in and I do provide eye masks for the light sensitive . So glad you enjoyed your stay and thank you for booking with us .All the best Frances Bill and Felicity .

Very warm welcome from Bill and Francis. I arrived by motorcycle, they made a space available to park the bike so it was safe and under cover. I was a bit concerned about what would be included in the accommodation , as I was on the bike and couldn't carry masses of stuff, but I needn't have worried. Absolutely everything you could possibly need is supplied. All bedding, fully stocked fridge, bread, cereals, the list goes on. All you need to do is turn up with a few changes of clothes. 'Morris' is set in a stunning location in a valley with a stream running close by. The location does mean that there's no WiFi or phone signal ( Great! Two whole days without emails or Facebook 😁) If you're not into self catering ( me 😊) there are various takeaways and restaurants/ pubs within a short drive. 'Morris' provides an excellent escape from the stresses and strains of modern life and is an absolutely perfect place for a chill out break in beautiful surroundings. Highly recommended. I will definitely be back 😁
