  • Yurts in a private meadow surrounded by ancient oak woodland
  • Less than 20 minutes' drive from Oxwich Bay, Caswell Bay and Swansea
  • Woodburning stoves and kitchens; holistic therapies available to book
Sort yourself a stellar stay in scenic south Wales at Seren Retreat, a 20-minute drive from Swansea city centre: this hideaway combines a top location close to west Glamorgan beaches with comfy yurt accommodation set in a private meadow encircled by an ancient oak forest. Being right in the middle of the Gower Peninsula – the first place to be named as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the United Kingdom – means beaches like Oxwich Bay, a haven for seal spotting, are an easy 20 minutes’ drive away. Other options? Build sandcastles at Llangennith (20 minutes), head off on the Wales Coast Path for hikes around Rhossili with views out to the Worms Head promontory (25 minutes) or take surfing lessons at the school at Caswell Bay just over 15 minutes away. Horse riding lessons can be organised nearby (check at the park for details) and yoga classes and holistic therapies are available on site. After a stretching session, head into your Mongolian-style yurt’s kitchenette equipped with pots, pans and cutlery to sate hunger using ingredients from the artisan delis at the quayside village of the Mumbles (20 minutes’ drive away); Swansea-born actress Catherine Zeta-Jones has a house in this famed and fancy Victorian settlement… If it starts getting chilly, the yurts also have a woodburning stove to gather round (and each tent comes with a private compost loo). Shared facilities include pure spring water on tap for drinking, and a shower block with hot and cold water.

Liked: Nature, quiet location, peaceful, lots of space, nice atmosphere. If the weather is nice, there is lots to explore, horses, goats, sheet and cows roaming freely, felt amazing, like being away from civilisation and surrounded in nature. When it rains, unfortunately there is not much you can do. Make sure you packed up wellies as grass is tall.

Disliked: Showers, toilet, lack of safety for young children. As a family we love camping, glamping and being outdoors, we know what to expect when we go places like this, however, our expectations were set high due to the price we paid for this place and oh my we were disappointed. Camping places for £17 per night have better facilities than this! It is not looked after at all. Hot tub mentioned on Pitchup- owners said its been broken for years! Misold information, it should be removed

Liked: The location was perfect for exploring the Gower peninsula. Lovely peaceful secluded site, felt very safe and was nice to be able to relax and let the kids play. The outside kitchen was well equipped, even down to supplying cleaning equipment, sponges and tea towels. It was lovely eating alfresco and seeing the horses walking by whilst having your meal. The stars in the night sky were so bright! No light pollution at all. The woodland surrounding the camp was lovely and we all enjoyed exploring it and finding the swings and hammocks. The yurt was beautiful inside, with fairy lights that came on in the evening as it got dark. My 7 year old said she felt like she was sleeping in a fairy pod! The owners were lovely and very attentive. They had a good knowledge of the local area and were more than happy to help with anything that we needed- thank you! No internet access, and although at home my 12 year old is normally on technology a bit too much, she didn’t miss it at all whist here for a week and loved her stay. It was nice to have a break from technology. Nice having access to your own compost toilet.

Liked: The Yurt decoration was pretty inside, the decking so the boys could ride their bikes, privacy and location.

Disliked: Not being able to park near the Yurt. We had so much to offload and reload. With young kids also falling asleep in the car on our way back from the beach we had to unlock two gates, drive through and relock, drop the kids off, then unlock and relock the gates again because the car park is roughly two fields away. Cleanliness omg, there were so many cobwebs everywhere, in the kitchen, especially in the toilet. Did not look as though it had been looked at for a few days at least before we came. There was a vaccum we could use but again hadn't been used prior to us arriving. The shared shower was quite a nightmare, I don't want to remember and no lighting near it so if it gets dark and you want to shower it's a pitch black walk through possible animal poo and stingers. No locks on the Yurt so we didn't feel safe at night as there is another Yurt that was occupied in the same field and you never know who's around. We had a man with us, if it was just us two women and the kids we wouldn't have stayed. Two roaming goats and horses. Didn't feel safe around them just walking around us freely. Horse poo should have been kept on top of a least a little more. There was a load right by our toilet and loads scattered throughout the medium level grass so playing games and running around was limited. One socket to use in the kitchen, no WiFi access, and little to no mobile signal.

Liked: From the warm welcome to the beautiful yurt and everything in between this weekend away was incredible. We are a family of 6 with children aged 19, 13, 10 & 6 and all agreed it was an amazing retreat away from everything. We were able to enjoy being close to nature, exploring the woods, watching the horses and goats and making friends with the cat. The children could run about safely and even enjoyed listening to the rain wrapped in blankets under the shelter. Seren provided the chance for us to connect as a family when normal life means work, school and technology can sometimes get in the way. From reading and watching the rain to running barefoot in the field everyone loved our time here and are already planning a return! Thank you for being so attentive and checking in to making sure we had everything we needed.

Disliked: There was nothing to dislike

Local attractions

As you might already have gathered, the Gower brims with beaches, but there are also other alternatives for offshore swims, including Broughton Bay’s calm natural rock pool (25 minutes' drive) and the 50-metre Wales National Pool Swansea (15 minutes). In between refreshing dips, cultural and historical activities to set off on include trips to Oxwich and Oystermouth castles or Swansea’s museums (all around 20 minutes); a couple of the most recommended are the National Waterfront Museum for an insight into Wales’ industrial past and The Tram Shed if you’re taken by time-honoured types of transport. For wildlife-rich attractions, try the WWT Llanelli Wetlands Centre for birdwatching and Clyne Gardens, a 25- and 15-minute drive away respectively, to snoop about among the rare species of plants. For the kids, meanwhile, Pembrey Country Park (45 minutes) has a pitch and putt course, a dry ski slope and a model railway.
