  • Popular place for hikers, bikers and Mach Loop viewers
  • Surrounded by woodland and farmland, 35 mins' drive from Zip World
  • Easy access to the Torrent Walk and Coed-y-Brenin mountain bike centre
Hiker, biker or both? Walk this way. Gywnedd’s Torrent Walk Campsite and Bunkhouse is a Snowdonia mecca for mountain bikers and walkers with trails for both all around. The Torrent Walk is only 500 metres from the site and the famed Coed-y-Brenin mountain bike centre is in the area with acres more walking trails around it. And, for the truly hardy, the mountain Cadair Idris and its three trails can be tackled nearby… and for the hardier still, the ziplines and airborne antics of Zip World Bounce Below are 35 minutes' drive away. Back at base, Torrent Walk Campsite and Bunkhouse is surrounded on all sides by woodland, farmland and mountain views, with pitches on a sheltered, level field. Site facilities include a toilet and shower block, disabled facilities, washing machines, tumble dryers, fridges, freezers, a microwave and mobile charging facilities. There’s also a power wash for bikes and equipment, and the Torrent Walk team can store your bike for you if needed. For stocking up, the garage just up the road sells essentials and Campinggaz, a shop and café are within a five-minute walk, and a small supermarket and a wide range of shops are in the village of Dolgellau a mile and a half away. Cooking your own dinner? Campfires are allowed but all the materials must be purchased on site.

Liked: Good location for local walks and close drive to other places to explore. Communication by text/email which was fine. Didn’t see any staff onsite but again, no problem for us. WiFi ok, a bit and miss.

Disliked: Unfortunately we stayed one the Easter holidays and the weather wasn’t great. Struggled to get the caravan onto the very muddy, sodden pitch. Also, needed help to push the car off the parking space. Pitches very small and close to each other. More gravel pitches needed on site.

Liked: Location

Disliked: Very muddy, no real road to get to pitches. Poor drainage and shower block very tired. The overflow shower block said closed for upgrading ahead of summer and this note was there last year!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: We have had months of non stop rain which is impossible to control and when people choose a grass pitch as you did the ground can be very soft after so much rain which causes mud when people drive onto the grass pitch. This is the risk you take when camping at this time of year in Wales! We receive a lot of positive comments about our showerblock and our staff work very hard to keep it clean to a high standard. The signs on the temporary shower block were placed there on Friday Morning, the temporary showerblock was open and being used last year, there were no signs on it. This year we feel it is no longer up to standard and are awaiting delivery of a brand new temporary showerblock which will be up and running in time for summer.

Ideal location for exploring Wales, great friendly staff.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: The location was incredible. The views that you got to wake up to was breath taking. Everyone that worked on the site were so friendly and helpful. There were so many amenities which were all clean and tidy. Although the weather wasn't the best, we were able to move to a pitch that was better and again although we were stuck in the mud, the employees were there to give us and hand and a push!

Disliked: Nothing to dislike at all!

From the manager: Thank you Anna, it's good to hear that you were happy with your stay.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: The campsite was beautiful and well located (a 5 minute drive into Dolgellau or a 30 minute walk), the site is also close to other primary locations such as Barmouth. The check in process was very self sufficient and we found our pitch with no issues. The facilities on site were great and the toilet block was always clean.

Disliked: No fault of the campsite at all but we did go during Easter bank holiday and there only being 3 showers and 3 toilets for females, and I think the same for males, it did prove difficult trying to have a shower or use the toilet at times. Again, no fault of the campsite but it is a relatively large site so be prepared during peak seasons to queue for the toilet or shower on occasion. No other faults as we had no issues or complaints about this brilliant site!

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Clean toilets and showers Spacious pitches Quiet site with lovely views Good phone signal/wifi - important as a solo traveller! Access to fridge, freezer, kettle, microwave and washing facilities in small room which was helpful!

Disliked: Self check in - very efficient however didn’t see anyone who worked at the site for the duration of my stay, felt a little like I was intruding as no one came over to welcome you. Would have preferred to ‘check-in’ or have someone available when you checked in Campsite doesn’t look anything like the photos on the site? Unsure if this is because the seasons just starting etc - although still good value as in the middle of Snowdonia. Had to cut my stay short due to the weather. Woke up Thursday to a very heavy snow fall which had collapsed my tent - solo female next to me and couple next to her and both had the same thing happen to their tents - obviously this couldn’t be helped and wasn’t the fault of anyone. Headed to reception at 04:30am in a hope of finding some help - reception was closed which was understandable considering the hour! There was an out of hours/emergency phone number on reception which I rang - other camper also rang - but had no answer. It was -5, the tents had collapsed under the weight of the snow, the snow was coming down heavy, we were freezing cold and soaked through. Was really hoping someone would have answered to see if we could use the bunkhouse or shelter somewhere warm for a few hours until it got light or just to have some help in that situation so was quite disappointed when no one answered after multiple tries. Left with no choice but to pack everything in the car and leave just before 5am. Unlikely to get a refund for the remainder of the stay lost :(

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: We do operate self check in which suits most people, if you want to come by and see us during reception opening hours you are very welcome to pop in. We do not operate a meet and greet or go around the site welcoming people, most people want to be left alone to enjoy their break and have some peace and quiet without the intrusion of a welcome party. I don't understand how you can say the site looks nothing like the photos when all the photos are of the site and most are taken and shared by visitors. As for the snow issue, we have absolutely no control over the weather or the efficiency of your personal camping equipment. Reception has set opening hours and is not 24 hours a day, you could have sheltered in the campsite utility/wash room where there is a kettle, microwave and fridge all free to use or in the heated showerblocks. We are sorry that your experience was not an enjoyable one on this occasion.

Local attractions

The mountains and trails of Snowdonia, the beaches of Barmouth and the north Wales coast, and heritage attractions like the Rheilffordd Talyllyn Railway and Harlech Castle are all within about half an hour’s drive of Torrent Walk, and Snowdonia National Park has activities for all sorts including whitewater rafting, horse riding, climbing and wild swimming. The closest activity to home is the popular Torrent Walk, a four-mile circular path following the River Clywedog through its gorge; keep an eye out for otters and lesser horseshoe bats along its route. For gentler strolls, the National Trust managed Cregennan Lakes are about five miles west of Dolgellau on the slopes of Cadair ldris, and the flat Mawddach Trail between Dolgellau and Barmouth along the Mawddach estuary has hiking and biking paths with cracking views. Cregannan also has two lakes for fly and worm fishing, one for brown trout and the other for brown and blue. Head to the coast for Barmouth and Fairbourne, both uncrowded and with miles of golden sand and Blue Flag awards. Beaut Barmouth Harbour, at the mouth of the Mawddach Estuary, is where to bag a boat for sea and fishing trips, while Fairbourne is a big pull for windsurfers and other watersport sorts. If sightseeing both seasides, take the Fairbourne Steam Railway from Fairbourne to Penrhyn Point and then the passenger ferry to Barmouth.
