  • Peaceful and dog-friendly back to basics site beside the river Dee
  • A five-minute drive to the Horseshoe Falls; 10 minutes from Llangollen
  • Trailer selling pizza and breakfast; a shop selling produce and logs
Looking to get some downtime in a wildlife haven? Explore a UNESCO World Heritage Site? Take plenty of peaceful strolls along rivers and canals? North Wales Bell Tents is already popular with the otters, buzzards, red kites, kingfishers and herons (they’ve all been spotted pottering around)… and it’s bound to be, considering its riverside spot on the river Dee. Yes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site is within reach too. The site is a 10-minute drive from Llangollen, which is part of a UNESCO site along with its eleven-mile canal. The site begins at the Horseshoe Falls (five minutes’ drive) and ends at the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (20 minutes). So, take a stroll along the towpath or opt for a horse-drawn boat ride across this spectacular stretch. North Wales Bell Tents is a dog-friendly, back to basics site with terrible mobile reception, which makes it even easier to get a digital detox. The site is very much rural, so it gets sublime starry skies on clear nights due to the low light pollution. If you’re planning on plenty of eves around a campfire, the site has a small shop that supplies locally-sourced logs, charcoal and produce. Foodies, don’t fret either – the on-site catering trailer also sells woodfired pizza in the evenings and tasty breakfasts for when you’ve just risen from your slumbers. If you’d like to spend the rest of your morning fishing, fishing is available on the river within walking distance of the site and the site will help you to purchase daily fishing passes. Otherwise, get stuck into the walking and cycling routes that surround the site. There are river activities locally and the Snowdonia National Park is accessible from 35 minutes’ drive, which includes Bala, a haven for yet more outdoor activities and watersports.

Local attractions

How about some historic sites to go with your watersports and outdoor adventures? You could climb up to Castell Dinas Brân (15 minutes’ drive) and pretend like you’re a medieval sentry. The heritage Llangollen Railway (10 minutes) revives the time of steam trains, and a trip will take you through the scenic Dee Valley. Chirk Castle (half an hour) is a local National Trust site and a grand medieval fortress surrounded by green plains - how excellent. If you intend to continue hiking and cycling, World's End (20 minutes) is a popular vale with dramatic cliffs on either side. Otherwise, make way for Snowdonia National Park, where Bala’s Llyn Tegid (35 minutes) has plenty of opportunities for canoeing and wild swimming and white-water rafting takes place on the river Tryweryn.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The location of this little campsite is fabulous, right on the bank of the River Dee, making it ideal for wild swimmers and those with kayaks or paddle boards. I also really like how laid back and relaxed the site is and it's just a short drive from central Llandudno and very close to Horseshoe Falls.

It's definitely a rustic campsite with more of a wild camping feel and you'll need to take your own water and I'd recommend taking your own camp loo too.

Disliked: Bank holiday weekend meant the site was quite full (but not overcrowded) however, I ended up choosing a space beside a large group who were extremely loud.

The site owners were lovely, and although I didn't complain, they did offer to help me move my tent, but being already fully set up and on my own, even with help, I didn't want the hassle of having to move and set up again and opted to stay where I was, which was probably a mistake.

As an old acid house raver, I'm used to banging tunes, but the tedious bass of what felt like constant speed house music, shouting, screaming and hours spent with a car engine idly, really did ruin any hope of peace or tranquility I had for the 4 days and I did strongly consider leaving early.

I literally had to keep earplugs in the entire time to allow myself any hope of zoning out and relaxing, though being beside a river, I'd anticipated listening to the river and sounds of nature, which for me personally, is the whole reason I camp.

I totally understand groups will be noisy in the evening after a few drinks, but surely past 10pm or 11pm it's just common courtesy to turn the music and speech volume down? Likewise, for families with kids, allowing them to yell at full volume at 7am when a whisper or lowered voice is more appropriate, is nothing short of selfish and extremely poor camping etiquette.

I do want to point out that the downsides were all based on antisocial noise levels, not the site itself, so I would definitely return again, I'd just ensure it wasn't during the school holidays or the main summer season.

Perhaps it would be worthwhile having some noise rules in place for after 11pm or even designating one of the fields for noisy families and groups and the second as a quieter zone to help appeal to more campers and ensure people get more of the camping experience they're looking for?

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Absolutely loved our stay, had such a relaxing time. There was a slight issue on site with a bunch of rowdy campers who were together but the owners sorted it out very quickly and reassured our family that everything was OK, they refunded us for the night that was disrupted and let us stay an extra night for free. We will be definitely coming back to this site very soon! This was our first time camping as a family and it couldn't of been better!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Second visit to this campsite, brilliant location, great people that run the sight, it’s a no fuss campsite which is what I enjoy most, but if you want to go the extra you can book into a bell tent and they will cater for you. Will be returning for a third time!

Disliked: Shame about the toilet or shower situation but we already knew that going in. And it didn’t stop me booked a second visit

Liked: Loved the location of this site! Right on the river bank, fantastic for the kids (age9and6) to play. Very friendly hosts, chopped logs for me and gave me wheelbarrow to transport back to my tent, the kids loved that! Fantastic location, close to local attractions. Will definitely come back to stay again 🙂
