General

  • Peaceful farm site within easy reach of the Brecon Beacons
  • Hay-on-Wye and Brecon within 20 minutes' drive
  • Massages, beauty treatments and hot tub on site

For hols full of horsing around – where you won’t feel sheepish but might feel like a pig in muck – settle in at Bryndu Caravan and Camping, a family-friendly site on a traditional working farm less than five minutes’ drive from the small Powys village of Llyswen.

In the mid-Wales countryside and 10 minutes from the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, Bryndu is a top spot for outdoorsy hols: two long-distance walking paths are within 20 minutes of base, and hiking, biking and riding trails through the Beacons are close to hand. There’s fishing on the Wye too where it passes through Llyswen, and canoeing and kayaking along the Wye from the nearby village of Glasbury.

That’s a whole lot of activity, so retreat to the site for a little reward… When muscles start to ache, and keeping busy has led to general dishevelment, trip along to the main farmhouse where there’s a holistic and beauty salon. Soothe aching limbs with a massage, unwind with a facial or mani-pedi, then float at leisure in the outdoor hot tub...

Evenings can be seen to with a well-timed stay: the site is within easy reach of the Royal Welsh Show, Brecon and Hay-on-Wye, leaving town types, book nerds and anyone mooooooved by agriculture well entertained.

Mary was instrumental in ensuring not only us being able to have a functional break (as the country is deciding whether or not to lockdown for a second time), but also very flexible with check in and out. The facilities were fantastic (brand new shower and toilet block) and the site was lovely and very well connected.

The pitch was well laid out and superbly constructed and planned to give each pitch it's own sence of space. The surrounding area is beautiful to look upon and the sence of peace and quiet was very refreshing. The shower blocks were kept to the highest possible standards through out our visit and the hosts were so welcoming. This site has set the bar for myself and my partner for future trips away. And we will be returning here one day. Many thanks James&Chris.

    Disliked:

There was a build up of rubbish which wasn't cleared for the entirety of our 2 night stay, which is the only downside.
Quite expensive too, we'd paid the extra thinking we could access B & B breakfast and the hot tub but both were closed due to COVID. Understandable, but didn't feel like value for money considering we'd paid £36 a night all in. We'd have also had to pay extra for WiFi on top of this as it wasn't available unless we paid extra to use the 4G.

Site is based at a working farm. The facilities are top notch and super clean.
The welcome is warm and nothing is too much trouble. Lots of advice available if needed for ideas to fill your time.
On clear nights, a short walk up the farm track gives a fantastic view of the night sky.

Local attractions

Active types who haven’t yet got their fill of adventure should stick around the Brecon Beacons (10 minutes’ drive from base) a little longer. Once hikes, bikes and rides are truly exhausted, there’s still climbing, caving, canoeing and sailing to try out, all the while keeping eyes glued to the skies (and the ground) for lapwings, red kites and reed warblers.

To take in all the spectacular views of the Beacons and the rest of the Mid Wales countryside, make a pitstop 10 minutes from the site in the small market town of Talgarth on the edge of the national park. This is a starting point for walks up the highest of the Black Mountains, Waun Fach, and for hang gliding trips over the park and mountain range.

The amphibious should swim along to Llangorse lake, 20 minutes from base – it's the largest natural lake in southern Wales, and there’s a whole lot here to keep visitors busy, from kayaking and canoeing, to paddleboarding and windsurfing, to sailing and catch-and-release fishing.

Prefer to keep things peaceful? Opt for some quiet time exploring the past with a stop at the National Trust’s Cwmmau Farmhouse (check opening days before visiting) half an hour away, or trek to the other side of the Brecon Beacons for the Brecon Mountain Railway, Blaenavon Ironworks and the Big Pit National Coal Museum.

Must see

  • Brecon Mountain Railway (25.1 kilometers)
  • Blaenavon Ironworks (29.5 kilometers)
  • Big Pit: National Coal Museum (29.6 kilometers)
