West Down Views Campsite: Our Bell Tents on a cloudy afternoon

General

  • Family site in a peaceful rural setting near Ringstead in Dorset
  • A 15-minute drive to Weymouth beach and 20 minutes to Lulworth Cove
  • Dark skies site with simple pitches

West Down Views Campsite is a family-friendly site in the middle of dreamy Dorset countryside. It’s just a 15-minute drive to the beach at Weymouth, and a break here puts you close to historic spots like local author Thomas Hardy’s cottage as well as the bizarre rock formations along the spectacular Jurassic Coast.

Along with the gorgeous views of Dorset hills, guests have access to well-maintained flushing loos, hot showers and a washing-up area. As this is a dark site, it’s a good idea to bring a torch for wandering around at night.

You can jump on the South West Coast Path in Ringstead, five minutes’ drive away, and there are golf courses, riding schools and fishing lakes within 15 minutes. Pootle around those winding Dorset lanes and sooner or later you’ll come across traditional beamed and thatched pubs serving local cider and delicious seafood.

If you’d rather fend for yourselves food-wise back at base, head to the supermarkets in Weymouth for barbecue bits and bobs. There’s also oodles for kids to do there – mini golf, animal encounters at SEA LIFE Centre Weymouth, and bumper cars at Fantasy Island will keep them happily entertained all day.

This site is really lovely. Very clean flushing loos and roomy and very clean showers. The site is a dark site so you can see the stars on a clear night and its very peaceful. Nice 20 minute or so walk to a lovely pub and a short drive to local beach. The lady who ran the site was so lovely and very helpful. We will definately be back :)

Showers were lovely with lots of room on the outside to hang your clothes and get dried etc

Quiet time between 10pm - 8pm which made it so much more peaceful.

Lovely views to wake up too.

Lovely warm welcome when we arrived.
Toilets and showers were great and also clean. Perfect location for ringstead beach, weymouth beach or lulworth beach. Dog friendly which was also great for us.
Nice and peaceful site. Would definitely stay again.

    Disliked:

Only issue we had was on our last night around 11pm-11.30pm ish we heard a car pull up right next to our tent. Then lots of noise and people putting up tents. I’m pretty sure arrival time is between 12pm-8pm? They had torches shining in our tent and their poles were banging together and they wasn’t quiet either when talking. They woke my daughter and also set my dog off with barking. My partner went out there and there wasn’t even a sorry.
Nothing to do with the owners or the site, as I’m guessing they didn’t know they arrived this late.

From the manager...

Dear Kerrie,

Thank you for your review and kind words about our campsite.

We are so sorry to hear that you and your family had your evening disturbed by inconsiderate campers. We do our best to stop anyone arriving after 8 pm and only last week we sent two cars to another campsite because they arrived at 10 pm. I don't know how these particular campers sneaked in but we will make sure it doesn't happen again.

Apologies again for the nuisance that this caused you.

Kind regards
Pauline
