  • Rural six-acre site 10 minutes' drive from Wimborne
  • Just off the 17-mile Castleman Trailway and 10 miles from Bournemouth
  • A 10-minute forest walk from a country pub
Walkies time… whether you’ve brought a dog pal along or not, Clayford Field is a cracking spot for those who like a bit of rural roaming on foot. This simple Dorset site is surrounded by places to get out and stretch your legs: it’s reached via two miles of gravel bridleway and encircled by the woods and fields of the Holt Heath National Nature Reserve, Uddens Park and Ferndown Forest, and a 10-minute toddle from the nearest pub through the forest (perhaps the most rewarding walk of all?). Ferndown and Wimborne Minster are both about 10 minutes’ drive away for urban bits like supermarkets and restaurants. Cycling types and more energetic walkers can head straight out onto the Castleman Trailway, a 17-mile stretch of disused railway line that leads all the way to Poole or the New Forest depending on which way you angle your sights. Golf, fishing and watersports are also nearby, and it’s half an hour's drive to the coast for beach days. Free spirits will be in their element here, as this is a place where you can pick your own pitch, to have as much space and shade as you like in the secluded six-acre field. There’s plenty of space for games, and access to basic facilities in the form of flushing toilets, hot showers and fresh water standpipe.

Local attractions

Boots or bikes are a given, so you can get out onto all those local trails, but it’s also worth chucking your fishing kit and/or golf clubs in the car – the White Sheet Trout Fishery is about a five-minute drive away and the Ferndown Forest Golf Club about 10. A riding stables is 20 minutes away for those who’d like to hack through the woods, and there’s wakeboarding, kayaking, paddleboarding and a crazy inflatable obstacle course on the lake at New Forest Water Park (25 minutes). It’s a 25-minute drive to the Dorset coast from here – set your sights on Bournemouth or Sandbanks for a sweep of sandy beaches, or head to Poole for boat trips to the nature reserve on Brownsea Island. Treating the kids to a day out? Let them pick from Farmer Palmer's Farm Park, the waterslides at Splashdown waterpark, the friendly cartoon characters of Peppa Pig World or animal antics at Monkey World; all are within a 45-minute drive. On a smaller scale (literally) is Wimborne Model Town, 10 minutes away.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked: This is a fantastic location for a basecamp to explore the surrounding area. It offers a pleasant 10-minute walk through the woods to reach the local pub, a convenient 15-minute drive to the river for a refreshing swim on sunny days, and just 30 minutes to reach the beach. The facilities here are adequate.

Disliked: The noise from the A31 can be audible during certain weather conditions and may be bothersome to individuals who are sensitive to such sounds.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked: Easy access to the site, facilities were maintained well. Any issues Sam was on site to help.

Disliked: The only downside was large amount of ticks, but that is outside of the site’s control and it is wild/budget camping.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked: We liked the self check-in. The toilets and showers were clean and there was plenty of space.

Disliked: It’s a bit of a long trek down an unmade road, but it wasn’t too bad.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked: The gated entrance which required a code, this made it feel safer as a solo traveller and also the flatness of the field...no trying to work out the best way to pitch your tent! Text from Sam on arrival, nice to have a contact.

Disliked: Washing up water could be warm to help clean away the grease easier.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked: Just had a very chilled weekend at this lovely pop-up site with our dog. The site is gated so very safe with key code entry sent to you prior to arrival. Perfect for children and dogs. You can more or less pitch up wherever you fancy. Ample room. Sam the owner was absolutely fantastic, so friendly and nothing was too much trouble. We hired a firepit which was perfect. The showers and toilets are well kept and cleaned regularly. There are some lovely walks and highly recommend a walk to The Forest Inn for food and drink. All in all a lovely peaceful retreat and we will definitely return.

Liked: Really loved this simple site, peaceful and not overcrowded. Love that you can pitch wherever you like. The staff running this site were so lovely and helpful and not intrusive in any way. Appreciated the locked main gate with a code for access made it feel very safe. Lovely walking with the forest all around and a lovely walk to the nearest Pub/Inn The Forest Inn situated in the golf course but again lovely friendly staff and super food.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike about this small basic camping field.
