Back of Beyond Touring, Camping and Glamping Park: Space to gather

General

  • Peaceful secluded park over a 30-acre wildlife haven
  • Free fishing in the site's river and wildlife lakes in season
  • Woodlands walks, pitch and putt, library and boules all available

If there was an award for ‘most aptly named park’, Back-of-Beyond Touring Park in Dorset might just carry off the gong – and you'd likely give it an accolade or three for activities, location and quiet calm too.

Spread over 30 acres of Dorset woodland, river, heathland and lakes, Back-of-Beyond meanders over countryside naturally inhabited by a wide variety of wildlife: look out for deer, squirrels, moles, rabbits and the soaring sights of birds including the resident woodpecker. The site is dog friendly too (apart from in one of the wildlife-laden accommodation areas) and there's a 10-acre woodland area set aside especially for canines.

Restful pastimes include free fishing on the park’s lakes and rivers (bring your own equipment and pick up a fishing licence when you arrive); boules; woodland walks, and a five-acre nine-hole pitch and putt course among the squirrels, moles and rabbits (hire the necessary bits and pieces on site).

The up-to-date facilities include three heated toilet and shower blocks with power showers and hot water, a private/disabled shower room, hairdryers, indoor and outdoor washing-up areas and a reception with morning bakery, lending library, newspapers, launderette and a shop selling bottled gas and essentials. All amenities are free to use and open 24 hours a day.

Essential supplies (food and beer) can be found at the two excellent pubs within walking distance; supermarkets, restaurants and two caravan and camping centres are within a few minutes by car.

Clean and tidy. Outside seating area/bar. Level pitches. Information pack. Meet and greet was friendly and informative. Quiet apart from the amount of dogs. Liked country walk and seating by lake. Various food vans.

    Disliked:

The number of dogs so there was a lot of barking. Most visitors had 2 or 3 dogs each. We didn’t realise how many dogs would be there ! pitches were a bit packed in. We felt a lack of privacy.

From the manager...

Thank you for the great review and we are so glad to see you would come again.
We have a real mix of customers with dogs and those without. We also have areas on the park where no dogs are allowed, so if your not a dog fan, you can always pitch there in the future.
As we are close to the New Forest and the country parks and we also have 18 acres of private woodlands. we are sought out by dog friendly customers as we have so much to offer.
We do ask that dogs are well behaved and ask guests to not allow barking.
I hope this didnt cause you too many issues.

Nothing to dislike. Bar could be open a little longer
Not really a dislike but maybe a notice on the pitches where to and not to place your awnings

From the manager...

Thank you for the top score. We are so pleased you had a great stay.
We have to be mindful of bar hours due to noise and close by 8.30pm as it is outside and noise does travel. We do explain pitching the awning when we walk everyone to the pitch and also there are diagrams in the welcome book given to every guest to ensure correct set up.
Hope that helps and we will see you again.

Extensive renovation work has been carried out on the pitches since we last visited in September 2020. The fully serviced pitch we stayed on had been resurfaced, was level and benefited from a newly installed EHU and grey waste inlet. We love the dog walking areas - there is nothing quite like a stroll through the forest early in the morning listening to the birds singing in the trees and watching the rabbits and other wildlife scurrying through the grassy undergrowth. There are plenty of places nearby to enjoy walks with very few people around to even consider about worrying over social distancing. We had a friendly welcome but as we are self contained there was no need for further interaction with the staff.

    Disliked:

Overall this is a first class site. The only downside was the narrow single lane access road - which on most journeys in and out was clear but on one occasion we were held up for ten minutes whilst an articulated lorry attempted to make a delivery to a yard sited in the same lane.

From the manager...

Thank you so much.
We have tried so hard to improve the park. We have also tarmacked the entire lane to make access easier, so i hope the lorry didnt cause you too much stress during your leaving the park.

Really enjoyed the peacefullness of the place. The person who welcomed us was friendly and helpful. Nice grounds. Good location to go and visit places by car. Shame about the closed toilets and shower but that seemed to be in most campsite.
Wash up area very clean and water very hot.

    Disliked:

The near A 31 noise at night disturbed my friend. Not me. The site is near but not right near it.

From the manager...

Thank you for the review. We appreciate it.
I see you marked us down for facilities. They are currently closed by law due to COVID until the 17th May. We have no control over this.
I am glad you mentioned the peacefulness of the park yet your friend said the noise of the A31 disturbed them. I am sorry to hear that. It is over 3/4 of a mile away but I do understand some are very light sleepers. I hope it didn't distract from your break with us.
