Space for all the family

General

  • In an attractive harbour village two minutes' walk from the beach
  • Two miles from the market town of Bridport
  • Pool, paddling pool, adventure playground, climbing wall, bar and café

Dorset apple cake with clotted cream, spankingly fresh seafood, organic cheeses, sumptuous ice cream, lipsmacking local ales – no wonder so many people flock to Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s old stamping ground.

The first River Cottage TV shows were filmed at his smallholding near West Bay Holiday Park, where guests are perfectly placed to make the most of the farmers’ markets, restaurants and brewery tours in the pretty neighbouring town of Bridport on Dorset's Jurassic Coast.

Don’t forget your bucket and spade: you can walk straight through the gates of the holiday park into West Bay’s scenic harbour and onto the stunning beach which goes on for miles. There’s no shortage of things to do on site either: wallowing about in the indoor pool, which has a separate toddlers’ pool with a slide, as well as a full-sized flume; there's also bike hire, nature trails, eclectic activities for preschoolers to teens in the well-organised kids’ clubs, a great adventure playground with a climbing wall, amusements, and free evening entertainment for the whole family in the Riverside Club.

There are good basic amenities on site (including a launderette, shop and off licence, and a cash machine) as well as a bar and café with harbour views if you tire of the washing up.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Single-sex parties of three or more people under 25 are not permitted on site.

Swimming pool access is included: please show your Entertainment pass.

Entertainment passes are included in the rate.

The position of the camp site is good, just a few minutes walk into West Bay and 25 minutes into Bridport through some lovely countryside.
We paid a tiny bit extra for a serviced pitch, electric, water and grey water disposal on the pitch, well worth it as the other water points are inconvenient.
Also liked the warden, a very helpful and knowledgeable chap.

    Disliked:

The very poor condition of the toilet and shower blocks. They are in urgent need of updating, . The cleaning regime was poor, I worked for a while as a contract cleaner, we would have been sacked had we ever left any area in the state that these services were left in.
The covid awareness seemed to be non-existent. No requirement for maximum numbers, no one way system possible and, on at least one occasion, not even hand soap in the dispensers. I pointed this out to the warden who said the he had no power to do anything about the situation. Some dirty toilet paper was on the floor in the men's area when we arrived and was still there three days later, disgusting. Should I have had to complain? NO! The cleaners should have seen this and taken immediate action.
I will also say that the reception that I was given while asking to check in was also pretty poor. The young lady in the reception office looked at me said "Touring?", I said "Yes, I would like to book in". She tore off a map of the site, drew a circle around an are and said "Go there." End of conversation. No "Hello, welcome to our site". No "Nice to see you". No "Enjoy your stay". Ah well, no training either, I guess.

Local attractions

Start on the doorstep in West Bay itself: you could go fossil hunting underneath the sandstone cliffs, crabbing in the harbour, take a boat tour of the Jurassic Coast, or head out into the big blue yonder on a sea fishing trip; then there’s golf, paragliding, scuba diving, watersports, and excellent walking along the coastal paths…

Take a break from feeding yourself up on all the gorgeous local produce to hand feed the birds at Abbotsbury Swannery, where the 600 nesting mute swans make for an impressive sight (and plenty of hungry beaks); there are also award-winning gardens and a kids' farm to explore.

The coastal resort of Lyme Regis has been drawing the crowds since time immemorial and is well worth a visit; other historical gems in West Dorset include the Jacobean manor house of Mapperton, set amongst topiary, terraced gardens and rolling hills; Forde Abbey and gardens; a cluster of castles; and the giant chalk man in the hillside at Cerne Abbas.

Alternatively, if there are animal addicts in your party, they'll go ape for the 240-plus inhabitants of Monkey World and potty for the penguins and underwater specimens at Weymouth Sea Life Park.
