  • Family-friendly site half an hour from the edge of Dartmoor
  • A 15-minute drive from Okehampton and 45 from Exeter
  • Reiki, massage and reflexology therapies; communal cabin with stove
In 2013, the owners of Hideaway Camping upped sticks and left London to escape the chaos of city life in favour of something a little slower and a little more peaceful. At the family-friendly site they set up 15 minutes’ drive from Northlew village in Devon, they want to give their guests a taste of that escape: come here to hide away... You can start this right on site by signing up for the likes of reflexology, reiki, massage and shamanic healing, before getting out for strolls to really soothe your work-addled spirit. The site is about half an hour from the edge of Dartmoor National Park, so walking, hiking, biking and riding trails are all nearby, including the Granite Way cycle path, National Route 27 and the Tarka Trail. Put your feet up back on site and bask in the peace and quiet, dozing gently over a book or board game in front of the Little Melbury communal cabin logburning stove; if you want to explore instead, there are trails to wander along leafy banks. Feeling peckish? Nab supplies in Okehampton, 15 minutes away, to prep in the Little Melbury kitchen or over a barbecue. Then pass the evening next to the campfire making the most of any clear skies for a bit of stargazing... then hide away to get ready for doing the lot all over again the next day.

Liked: The kids and adults loved the bus! Friendly welcome from the owners on arrival. We arrived just before storm Ciarán and the bus was directly in its path however the bus was in a sheltered part of the campsite and Ciarán passed over us without even rocking the bus!

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: So calm and relaxing, lovely grounds and walk by the stream. The pigs on site are so funny. There are 4 cats who love a fuss, 1 gave us a vip tour around the pont :-). facilities are great and clean. Has a communal area with sofas fridge and amazing throne toilets. Theres such a cute dog on site called jasper and so calm for anyone not liking dogs. Be careful as he loves cheese :P Owners are so down to earth and lovely and happy to have a chat. No need to take a bbq or fire pit as these are on the pitch which is amazing, Logs can be brought for £5 a bucket, bargin! along with essentials and marshmallows for the fire. Not far from okehampton if you need additional supplies. Overall relaxing few nights with mum for some downtime, which was well needed.

Disliked: Just the road down as very bumpy, if you have a lowered car be very careful and slow. Owners cant do much about as the rain keeps washing the road away with the rain :-( If you get the right side of the track youl be ok, as i found out on the way back :-)

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: The welcoming, comfortable, calm and relaxed magical feel. Good, clean facilities. The willow screening between pitches. The abundance of birdsong, the freedom to wander through the trees, the beautiful starry night sky with no light pollution. Fire gazing with the firepit and the incredibly friendly pets who love a lap and a fuss. The honesty shop has some essentials and well thought ideas for additional treats and is really well priced. The communal space, a nice touch! The fairy Garden, even as adults we enjoyed exploring it! No WiFi 👏🏼 but good phone signal so can be used if needed. The whole place has little bits and pieces everywhere if you bother to look for them and there are lots of small really nicely thought out touches that make a big difference. Great location! We visited The Junction Inn for lunch which is 10 mins away, great place thoroughly recommend.

Disliked: The likes thoroughly out way any of the following comments but my only thoughts were that some people might find some of the pitches a bit slopey and the driveway is long, narrow and bumpy but it wouldn't stop me coming back.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Lovely set up, I like the way the tent pitches are separated with willow "fedges". Lots of open space with interesting features and also a good balance of wooded areas with little walks and more....interesting features! I camped alone this time as I was in the area for a business workshop. My kids would have loved it, I may have to visit again with the family sometime!

Disliked: The shower temperature was a little temperamental, no biggie, but there was definitely a knack to getting a steady warm shower! 🚿 Some people (not me) might not like the half a mile of bumpity bumpity track leading to the campsite - it really tests your suspension! 😂

Local attractions

Start your stay by getting a taste of the Dartmoor experience in the town of Okehampton, 15 minutes’ drive from the site: explore the ruins of the 11th-century castle (rumoured to be haunted), then continue on to the Museum of Dartmoor Life to learn about the people who have lived here over the last 5,000 years. Keep it in the past with stops at some of the neighbouring stately piles to see how the wealthy used to live (Castle Drogo, Powderham Castle, Cotehele, Killerton House and Knightshayes Court are all within around an hour), or venture into Exeter, 45 minutes away, for museums, underground passages and the famed Exeter Cathedral. After something a little more active? Make a foray into Dartmoor for horse riding, gorge scrambling and whitewater kayaking and canoeing, climb Hay Tor for spectacular views, swim over to Tamar Lakes for sailing and windsurfing, or head coastward for beaches, surfing, coasteering and paddleboarding in Bude seaside resort. Got kids toddling along behind? There are plenty of theme parks and adventure parks within an hour of the site, or you could try something a little less high-octane with afternoons at the Miniature Pony Centre or Gnome Reserve and Wildflower Garden.
