Higher Murchington Farm: Spacious grassy pitches - pick your own

General

  • Quiet and simple field site on a working farm on Dartmoor
  • A five-minute drive to Chagford for pubs and shops, walking trails
  • Fishing 10 mins; kayaking and climbing 25 mins; Haytor Rocks 30 mins

There are no apologies from the team of Higher Murchington Farm about sharing their views with you... views of Dartmoor, that is, stretching scenically all around.

The owners here keep it simple: they’re busy running a farm for a start, but they welcome visitors (and their well-behaved dogs) to come and share this slice of the wild Devon countryside. On the eight-acre field you’ll have plenty of room and you can pick your own pitch; campfires are fine here too. Amenities include eco toilets and a washing-up area.... and apart from that, nothing between you, the skies and the vast moor below.

It’s a five-minute drive or half an hour’s (very pleasant) stroll over to Chagford, for pubs with hot food, as well as shops for stocking up; head down to the Teign for a picnic or a riverside walk into open countryside. A 15-minute walk out of town (or a 10-minute drive from the site), is Chagford pool, an open-air river fed watering spot where there are yet more spectacular views.

This is an eco-friendly site, where the team tries its utmost to run the site on a low impact, eco basis with solar energy and water from the farm.

What a view, stunning this site is a gem. Pitched perfect, this site has all you need for a wild camping holiday. Heated shower and your own kitchenette. Clean and in spoilt. A much needed escape and so close the Chagford village which has plenty of places to shop and eat. Okehampton round the corner too so plenty of organised activities and hiking on your doorstep. Hayley was super helpful and made us feel at home.

The isolation, the views, access to hot and cold water, fire pit/bbq the delicious fresh eggs and the hosts thoughtful touches. This is a bare bones campsite, as close to wild camping as you can get with amenities! Loved having our own personal composting toilet and access to a hot shower. With only two pitches sore as well apart you feel like you’re on your own. There is very good 4G signal here too.

    Disliked:

The flies! But then this is a farmers field with cows nearby and is to be expected, they didn’t really bother us and with a fire going or a few citronella they stayed away!

    Views and quiet

    Disliked:

Long grass and lack of warm water to wash hands. £15 also seemed a lot for just a field with a toilet in a shed.

From the manager...

Thanks for taking the time to review us.
We are sorry you didn't enjoy your stay, we do try and make it very clear in our photos and description that we operate a really simple pop up site and we send an additional email to all everyone who books listing what facilitates (i.e shower, toilet and washing up area) are available so that all campers know whats on offer.
The reason we charge £15 per pitch is because we only ever have 6 pitches, which ensure that our campers enjoy the views and the quiet - which we are very pleased to read that you did enjoy.

We loved everything about this site! The hosts are supremely helpful and thoughtful, providing everything you could possibly need in the tent. We love the excellent views, sitting round the campfire each night, the eco-friendly shower and toilets, and the quiet location of the campsite. We were there last year and we will definitely be back next year- many thanks Vicki and Hayley

The farm was on top of a beautiful hill with a view of the town and amazing countryside. Close to lots of walks, great natural swimming spots and pubs for a pint or two in the evening! The shower was really warm (exactly what was needed after a day walking in the inevitable rain) and the toilet block was always clean and well kept. It was also nice to be greeted by Vicky who let us know firewood was for sale and other handy tips for our stay.
It was the perfect campsite for people who enjoy peace and quiet... and a great sunrise!

Local attractions

It’s a walkers’ paradise round here, with Chagford a handy juncture to join in the mighty Two Moors Way, a coast-to-coast extravaganza of some 117 miles (you don’t have to do all of it in one day...). Okehampton (25 minutes’ drive) is a hub for many of the hiking and cycling routes circling the edge of the moor, and a good place to hire a bike if you haven't brought one along.

Fisherfolk are well looked after in this part of Devon as well, with day permits available for fishing brown trout, sea trout and salmon on the Teign and in the peaceful surrounds of the Fernworthy reservoir. If it’s the patter of tiny hooves you’re hankering for, head to Dartmoor's Miniature Pony Centre (15 minutes) for opportunities to meet, greet, groom and ride the lovely little fellers. For those in search of bigger thrills, Adventure Okehampton (25 minutes) has surfing and canoeing on its private lake as well as abseiling and archery, climbing and various high jinks on the high ropes.

For views, don’t miss Haytor Rocks and the paths around them (30 minutes) or the ancient peace of Buckfast Abbey (40 minutes), home to monks since the 11th century.

Must see

  • Castle Drogo (3.8 kilometers)
  • Buckfast Abbey (21.8 kilometers)
  • Exeter Cathedral - Church of Saint Peter (23.8 kilometers)
