General

  • Scenic adults-only dog-friendly site in Dartmoor National Park
  • Haven for hikers and bikers, 20 minutes from Exeter city centre
  • On-site shop, information centre and secure off-lead dog area

Escape from messy desks, busy inboxes and fume-filled commutes with a peaceful fresh-air stay among grownups only at Barley Meadow Touring Park, a dog-friendly site under five minutes’ drive from the Devon village of Crockernwell.

As it's in Dartmoor National Park, this is a top spot for hikers and bikers with a yen for exploring far-off places: the 117-mile Two Moors Way (which stretches from Ivybridge to Lynmouth) passes 10 minutes’ walk from the site, and National Cycle Route 27 and the Granite Way walking trail can be joined 15 minutes’ drive away in Okehampton. Closer to home, you can amble along country lanes to the thatched haven of Drewsteignton village (and its pub) in around half an hour or so.

There’s plenty more to investigate around splendid Dartmoor, but of course… but not before kicking back for a bit on site… Stock up on snacks in the on-site shop (open subject to demand) while letting canine chums run off-leash in the dog area, or plan outings and pick up ideas for local walks, activities and visits in the little information centre.

All sound a bit too rural? Never fear, as the site’s central and easy to reach: it’s just off the A30, and there’s a bus stop right outside the site entrance for trips to Exeter and Bude.

Lovely, quiet and clean campsite. Staff are very friendly and helpful, too. Facilities are clean and working fine. Some stunning sunsets to watch. Free WiFi was a little slow to stream but you get very good phone signal so this wasn't an issue either. Would definitely recommend and would stay here again.

    Disliked:

From the manager...

Many thanks for your review - just a quick note regarding the free WiFi - had you opted to purchase the premium WiFi (which is more suitable for streaming) this would have worked well. Premium WiFi is not expensive but does help us cover the overhead as we provide this service directly (not through a 3rd party). For the new season we are excited to have a dedicated fibre connection being installed to the site by Openreach (which we hope will go live in March 2021) which will increase our current 30Mbps rural WiFi to 300Mbps - again we will offer a limited free service to all our campers with a paid option when needed based on use. Best wishes, Martin

The whole site was very well presented and extremely clean. All COVID measures followed stringently and everything explained well upon arrival. The toilet/shower block was immaculate and cleaned regularly. The site was fairly quiet due to the time of year and the ongoing pandemic, so it was overall a very peaceful visit! We will certainly be staying again.

Local attractions

Devoting a few days to rambling explores of Dartmoor National Park is a must hereabouts, with plenty of stunningly scenic spots to include in itineraries. Start with the nearby Teign Valley and the can’t-miss Lydford Gorge (the deepest gorge in south-west England) – don’t forget a camera to snap some shots of the spectacular White Lady waterfall and the Devil’s Cauldron whirlpool.

There are more ways to explore Dartmoor National Park than on foot or by bike too: adrenaline junkies can try out whitewater kayaking or canoeing along the River Dart, or head into Okehampton to sign up for scrambling through gorges.

History buffs are well served around these parts too: jaunts into Exeter come with possible pitstops at the city’s famed cathedral, medieval guildhall and Tudor-built House that Moved (that one deserves a quick internet search), while rural travels lead to stately manors including Powderham Castle, Castle Drogo, Killerton House, and Buckland and Buckfast abbeys, all within an hour's drive.

Poke around England’s last working water-powered forge at Finch Foundry and visit the Museum of Dartmoor Life near Okehampton, or step back into the present day with some kid-friendly fun at Crealy Adventure Park or Diggerland Devon, both around half an hour from the site.
