  • Small family- and pet friendly park close to the Jurassic Coast
  • A 10-minute drive from Lyme Regis and Axminster
  • Play area, heated amenities and barbecue/campfire area
Have a quick flick through the reviews for Sunny Side Caravan and Camping and you’ll likely note the word ‘friendly’ cropping up time and again… always a good start, eh? And indeed owners Tony and Emma offer a cheery welcome to all guests at their Devon site: couples, families, kids, dogs and essentially anyone that fancies a peaceful rural break within striking distance of Lyme Regis and Axminster (both 10 minutes’ drive away). A lot of effort has gone into making sure this place has things sorted for such breaks: for starters you may like to note the heated toilet and shower block, and the fact that the play area has picnic tables next to it where weary parents can settle with a cuppa (or perhaps something a touch stronger) while keeping a beady eye on energetic tiddlers. Emma and Tony are firm believers that campfires are an essential part of the outdoorsy experience, and so they’ve installed a sociable campfire area where experts can share tips and novices can try out their skills at a safe distance from the main action. Also vital for such stays are plenty of hours spent out in the fresh air, and they’re easily achieved from this spot – walkers (and dogs in need of walkies) can hit footpaths just outside the site or drive south for 10 minutes or so for the coast path. That coast is, of course, the Jurassic Coast, a prime spot for fossil hunts, beach days, watersports, seafood dinners and all sorts of activities… just as well you’ve got a peaceful place for slumbers after that little lot.

Liked: Fab small, low key site! A last minute booking for the Easter Bank Holiday. Large hardstanding pitches (water & electric on the pitch), toilet & shower block, easy access with our large caravan, great base for walking, cycling & sightseeing....We were met by the owner who gave us a brief but informative overview of the site & area. A lovely gesture Easter Sunday, the Easter Bunny paid a visit to each pitch! Very relaxed feel to the place. Just how we like it & hope to be back again one day. Thank you😉

Liked: It is a small site, and all pitches have hardstanding with water and electricity. A community shop and pub are within walking distance. All the main facilities, shower, toilets and washing up area. The toilets and showers were lovely and clean. Nice people welcomed us to the site and got us set up.

Disliked: Hot water for the washing-up area runs very slowly and takes ages to fill the sink. I wonder if this could be run off the same boiler as the toilet sinks?

Liked: Great location for a Chalmouth beach, and lots of lovely walks from the site.

Disliked: No dislikes at all, there’s very little phone signal there (not necessarily a bad thing!).

Route directions

Do not follow the satnav. If you're travelling to the site via Chard, it will incorrectly direct you down Broom Lane, which is a difficult route to take. Instead, please follow the directions to Axminster and join the A35. Turn left on to A35 towards Dorchester. You will see the Hunters Lodge pub on the right-hand side. Directly on your left will be Crewkerne Road. Take this road and follow it for approximately two miles to Hawchurch, then take the turning to Wareham. The site is the second site on the right.

Local attractions

First stop: Jurassic Coast (presumably). Start off in Lyme Regis (10 minutes’ drive) for an aquarium, mackerel fishing trips and fossil walks, then head over to Charmouth (10 minutes) to try out your new fossil-hunting skills to see if you can unearth your own prehistoric prize. Other top spots along the coast include the towering cliffs of West Bay (20 minutes), the sandy beach and family-friendly attractions of Weymouth (45 minutes) and the ancient sea arch at Durdle Door (an hour). Like to take in as many sea views as you can? Off to the South West Coast Path you go to see how many of its 630 miles you can get under your boots. Grownups fond of a brew or two may like to stop off at Lyme Bay Winery (15 minutes) or take a tour of Palmers Brewery (20 minutes), stopping off for the obligatory photo by the sign on the way into the village of Beer (20 minutes). Non-tippling outings might include Axe Valley Wildlife Park (10 minutes) or Haynes International Motor Museum (40 minutes).
