General

  • Rural glamping two miles from village, and half a mile from local pub
  • A 15-minute drive to Eurostar at Ashford; 30 minutes to Camber Sands
  • Bed linen, bathrobes, fridge, private garden and barbecue all provided

Bring your walking boots, your keenest appetite and your dog to Woodchurch Safari Lodge in Kent: there are first-rate strolls and hikes all around this dog-friendly glampsite, including one to an award-wining pub (and its food menu) a half-mile amble away.

A few minutes' saunter from the safari lodge will take you to a local path leading to around three hours' worth of walking in scenic Kent countryside, while the South Of England Rare Breeds Centre is a three-and-a-half-mile walk to the south. This is top terrain for cycling too, with with National Cycle Route 18 (a 61-mile route from Canterbury to Tunbridge Wells) passing by; secure bike storage is available for guests.

The site has splendid access to and from as well, as it's a 15-minute drive to the Eurostar terminal at Ashford if you're heading to or from the continent. And if you seek the beach? It's about half an hour from here to splendid Camber Sands.

The lodge is kitted out with beds, towels, bed linen and bathrobes, as well as solar-powered lighting, a fridge, charging facilities, and water and food bowls provided for your friend. A private garden, private car parking space and a barbecue are just outside.

We had a super brilliant time at the Woodchurch Safari Lodge. It's an amazing glamping experience - all the comforts of home but surrounded by fields and a lovely outside space. Our hosts were really welcoming, friendly and informative, letting us know all the best local spots for wild swimming and walks. We spent our early evenings watching sundown deer playing and looking out for the local owl. Later evenings we sat on the terrace watching shooting stars, had a barbecue and sat around a fire roasting marshmallows. Even our kids were happy to be off-grid at the Woodchurch Safari Lodge! Lit by solar power and firelight, we felt like we were in our own special retreat - back-to-nature yet with lovely comfortable beds and hot shower to hand. We will definitely want to revisit. A big thank you for a wonderful few days!!!

Fantastic stay at the Safari tent, felt like a real break, especially after lock down. Liz and Ally were great hosts and its a brilliant set up, lovely to have your own area and to have toilet and shower to yourselves, all of which were very clean. We did not know this part of Kent , but really enjoyed exploring the local area, sitting in the sun and cooking in the evening. Would definitely recommend.

The tent was clean and had everything we needed for BBQ and breakfast. Liz and Ali were great hosts. Also had clean towels and torches and little battery powered lights which were very handy.
The surrounding area is beautiful but can’t really be enjoyed when you’re at the lodge itself.

    Disliked:

We expected to have a nice view to enjoy from the front porch, but you’re either looking at a hedge or the bathroom area (shower and porta-loo behind screen) when you’re in the garden or sitting on front porch. Also the garden and tent are directly on a country road and on the Friday evening it was relatively noisy.
Also the cracked ground in the garden (apparently due to dry weather?) was a huge hazzard for our 2 year old.

From the manager...

Thanks for your feedback Jeff.

The ground here is clay and in the summer with less rain it dries out and cracks. There isn’t much we can do about that. We did advise you of this when you arrived.
There isn’t much we can do about the traffic either I’m afraid. But it’s a shame you found it noisy.
Usually it is very quiet here as you can see from other reviews, unless there is a problem on the A28 and then people use our road as a cut-through. We would love to be able to control the traffic and the weather, but we haven’t been able to crack either so far. We’ll keep working on it 😉
Shame you didn’t seem to enjoy it though, you definitely seemed very happy when you were here perhaps as it was raining on one day this dampened your view and you made no mention of any of this to us at the time.
Sadly the lodge was left in one of the dirtiest states yet and it took us extra time to clean it. Very disappointing.

Great facilities - everything you could want in terms of cooking and cleaning plus even solar power for some lights and charging phones etc.
Comfortable beds/ sofas - proper mattresses and bedding
Lovely hosts - very friendly and helpful
Perfect for families and small groups

    Disliked:

Bit of noise from the nearby road - nothing to worry about as it is a quiet road but does slightly detract from the setting when you hear the odd boy racer screaming down there

Very disappointed, portaloo, no lighting, couldn't even make a slice of toast as no electricity, busy road☹️

From the manager...

Very disappointed with your review and feel your scores are much lower than warranted.

This is glamping accommodation and part of the charm is it’s totally off-grid. There is lighting in the accommodation which is run by solar panels and one of your party was shown how to use this. Torches are also available and supplied.

The toilet is an event toilet which is serviced at least once a week and is kept clean and tidy.

Given 4 people stayed for a total of £125 per night, we also feel you’re being pretty unfair by saying it isn’t value for money either.

Still. Clearly glamping wasn’t for your party.

Local attractions

Potter into Woodchurch, a mile or so away, for a wander around the Woodchurch Village Life Museum on Susan's Hill, then a clamber up to Woodchurch windmill for handsome views over the Walland marshes to the Channel. (Most happily too, the mill – when open in summer – is accessible via the footpath between the local pubs…)

About a mile out of town is the South of England Rare Breeds Centre, where there are farm animals to see, a petting barn where your small sorts can snuggle smaller critters, and wildlife gardens, a butterfly tunnel and an aviary to roam around. Or stay close to home to see species like deer, squirrels, woodpeckers, herons and kestrels in the countryside around the site and along the peaceful cycle lanes nearby.

More birdwatching and nature spotting is easily sorted at Rye Harbour Nature Reserve (35 minutes' drive), voted Britain's favourite reserve in 2016 and home to all sorts of species around its coastal marsh, reedbeds, shingle and saltmarsh. The reserve has miles of paths to tramp, five hides to birdwatch from and events and guided walks all year round.

Other top local options include a puff on the Kent & East Sussex Railway (15 minutes), a grownup look at Chapel Down winery (20 minutes), or taking your camera along to Bodiam Castle, set spectacularly in its own moat near Robertsbridge.
