  • Large open field behind a pub in the Kent countryside
  • Beaches, castles, wildlife and walks within 40 minutes' drive
  • Dogs and barbecues welcome; playground; Canterbury 20 minutes by car
Anyone for the pub? There’s one right next to this site in the Kent countryside, and all around it the stuff this county’s famous for: castles, coasts, cliffs and cracking country views. It's all at The Hop Pocket, a friendly hostelry in Bossingham in the Kent Downs, in front of a large open field for guests to pitch up in. Outside the pub there’s a pretty garden to sup ales in and a playground for the kids to clamber on; the Hop Pocket's pair of resident dogs love visitors (human and canine) and the latter are welcome to wander about without leads. The pub serves drinks from Tuesdays to Sundays and another pub serves food throughout the week in Stelling Minnis, half an hour's stroll away across the common. For self catering, barbecues are allowed on site and supermarkets for supplies are 15 minutes' drive away in Chilham (anglers can have a whale of a time there on the fishing lakes too). For an intro to the Downs and their wildlife, just wander the village: the area is crisscrossed with footpaths and bridleways. For a compact tour, head half an hour to the Blean Woods National Nature Reserve; trails of all lengths are around this protected wilderness, but even a whistlestop visit gives you the chance to see wildflowers and rare butterflies, while listening out for woodpeckers and the call of the nightingales.

Local attractions

For history stretching from Roman times to World War II, Canterbury 20 minutes’ drive away is famed for its castle, cathedral, city walls and winding medieval old town. With an equally impressive timespan, Leeds Castle is 40 minutes away, combining falconry and jousting with grand gardens and a house with nine centuries of stories to tell. Castle buffs are in for endless treats around here, as the once heavily fortified coast is 40 minutes’ drive away, and many of its ancient strongholds, like Deal, Dover and Walmer are still intact and worth a wander. For more recent history, the South Foreland Lighthouse explains the game-changing radio transmissions Marconi made from here, and you can top it off with a cuppa in the lighthouse's 1950s tearoom and a tour of the World War II tunnel networks. For seaside towns where the buildings are as big a draw as the beaches, you can't beat Broadstairs and Rye (50 minutes). As well as bucket and spade stuff, the coast between Whitstable and Sandwich Bay serves up a fine spread of paths on dunes and cliffs, taking you through a changing landscape of wetlands and heaths. Pack your picnic and make for the Sandwich and Pegwell Bay National Nature Reserve for the contrast of wildflower meadows up high, wading birds on the estuary below and sea trips out to the seal colonies.
