Tile Barn Outdoor Centre: on-site archery

General

  • Family-friendly site in the grounds of a New Forest activity centre
  • A 15-minute drive from Beaulieu; 20 from Exbury Gardens
  • Climbing wall and archery on site; 10 minutes' walk from a station

Forest rangers and active champs – here's a tried and tested site for you. New Forest locals and visitors have got up to all manner of open-air action at Tile Barn Outdoor Centre since it opened in the early 1970s. Set on the edge of the peaceful village of Brockenhurst, the site is a fab launchpad for those looking to get out and about in the New Forest National Park.

This spacious 14-acre site has well-maintained facilities like loos, hot showers and a washing-up area, all of which can be reached via an accessible and well-lit path. There’s also a secure entrance gate with a key code, meaning you can relax and play in these green surrounds with extra peace of mind.

On top of all that, there's a winning line-up of adventurous activities here, with climbing and archery often available – drop by for a chat with the friendly folk at reception to check what's on offer during your stay.

The site is an easy 15-minute stroll from Brockenhurst village centre; the village doesn't have a cattle grid, so it's the kind of place where you may well see donkeys and cows wandering around. Watch them take a dip at the ford while you head to the supermarket to stock up, or treat yourself to a sticky bun from the bakery. A railway station with services to Lymington, Bournemouth, Southampton and London is a 10-minute walk away from base.

Warm insulated pods with everything you’d expect from a camping site. Toilets, showers and washing up areas all ample and clean. Staff friendly and good access to walks/rides. Pods well designed and good size.

    Disliked:

Road noise makes it feel less rural. Could do with brighter lights or bring your own as couldn’t do much soon as dark.

Lovely location, activities on sight looked awesome (sadly not open), clean facilities and polite staff. Poppy pods were really nice, clean and a really nice cosy.

    Disliked:

Close to the main road, the solar power doesn’t last long on the pod but it was okay as we had torches and our own battery packs.

The facilities were superb, showers were hot, lots of them. Toilet block was clean and social distancing was spot on. We thought the use of fridge freezers and kettles was a nice touch. Pods are super with lighting and usb chargers for phones etc. Site is secure with automatic key entry gates. There is equipment available for hire and the staff are friendly and ready to help out.
The location of the site is excellent, about a mile to Brockenhurst, took all of 15 minutes to walk, there are pubs, take aways and a superb ironmongers.

Cheap price. Good if you want to do the activities. Toilets were clean.

    Disliked:

The pods are all facing each other in a circle, as opposed to the greenery around you. This place is set up for it's main focus of activities and fails to utilise the natural beauty around it. I've glamped in a few places and something about this place didn't feel as nice. Also given wrong pod lock number so had a faff with that.

A great stay in the pods which were very clean and perfect for a couple of nights stay with the family. Nice clean facilities and hot showers so perfect to warm up on a cold morning. Well worth a visit with it being 10/15 min walk to Brockenhurst too.

My partner and I backpacked and were surprised at how close to the station it is, a walk up one country road and you're there!
Clean facilities with hot showers! My partner is a bi fn of luxury and not so on thd camping and cold showers, so this was great!
Wonderful BBQ to hire but awful to clean!

Local attractions

Most folk visiting this spot will find a fair few things to do on site, but when you do decide to venture off you'll be out in the gorgeous open forest in no time. For riverside rambles, pack a picnic and head for the path from Beaulieu to Buckler's Hard (15 minutes' drive), a gentle stroll through varied New Forest countryside that joins up these two stonkingly scenic settings.

After watching waders from riverside bird hides or heading out on a boat cruise from Buckler's Hard pier, make tracks back to Beaulieu and check out the National Motor Museum and its splendid cars and motorcycles. This place is more than just a collection of auto memorabilia (although there's plenty here if that's your thing) – visitors can also ride a monorail, traipse through the ruins of Beaulieu Abbey or take tours around plush Palace House.

Also about are Hurst Castle Spit (20 minutes), a striking seaside spot with a Napoleonic fortress at the end, and Exbury Gardens (20 minutes), an exquisite 200-acre woodland that you can take in on foot or from a nifty narrow-gauge railway.

Must see

  • Exbury Gardens and Steam Railway (6.7 kilometers)
  • Beaulieu National Motor Museum (8.1 kilometers)
  • Fort Victoria Country Park (12.1 kilometers)

National Trust

  • Newtown Old Town Hall (15.8 kilometers)
