  • Peaceful back-to-basics site on a working farm in rural Sussex
  • A 20-minute drive from the beaches of the south coast
  • Firepit and cooking grid provided for each pitch
You’d be wise to arrive at Warbleton Farms with a plentiful stash of marshmallows – campfires are a big feature of life here and you don’t want to be in danger of snack envy upon spying your fellow guests’ after-dinner treats… Those of you that aren’t in possession of a campfire-building badge from Scouts or Brownies (or if your skills have gone a touch rusty in the intervening years) will be chuffed to find that life has been made easy for you here: each pitch has its own firepit and grid so no worries about whether you’ve chosen a sensible spot. All there is for you to do is build and light the fire, crack open a cold drink and look impressed at your survival skills. If it turns out that your survival skills don’t quite stretch to a full dinner, don’t worry – there are pubs within walking distance where you can have a good feed and sample a local ale or two. Kids (and adults should you wish) can really roam free around here; with no cars outside of the designated parking areas it’s pretty safe to run about and play games. The lack of cars also means it’s mighty quiet should you choose to settle yourself into one of the hammocks in the woods and spend a bit of time communing with nature. Wildlife spotting opps abound in the woods and around the stream so keep your eyes peeled for passing beasties. The back to basics vibe on this working arable farm means only minimal facilities, but you’re provided with drinking water and composting toilets. There isn’t even any wifi (no need to mention this to the kids – once they’re over the initial shock they’ll soon work out that it is indeed possible to survive offline).

Local attractions

Now that they’ve got a taste for country life, kids can play at being a farmer at Blackberry Farm, a 20-minute drive away. There are lots of friendly animals to meet here, and a daily schedule of activities including tractor rides, pony rides, pig feeding and egg collecting. There’s also a huge play area with a zip slide, trampolines, go-kart track, an assault course and heaps more for hours of entertainment. Animals from all around the world are on show at Drusillas Park, 25 minutes away: wander around to see monkeys, camels, penguins and snakes among others. Pack the kids’ swimming cossies and they can splash about in the water play area, full of jets, fountains and geysers to keep them chilled on a warm day. At Bentley Wildfowl & Motor Museum, half an hour away, you can feed the birds (around 1000 of them, across more than 100 different species), take a ride on the miniature railway and look around the collection of cars, motorbikes and other vehicles, some of which are more than 100 years old. Even older is 15th-century Herstmonceux Castle, 20 minutes away; the moated castle is surrounded by a 300-acre estate made up of woods and formal gardens. Castle tours are available at certain times of day (check before you arrive) but you can always wander around the estate and, if you’re visiting in high season, perhaps take a ride in a horse-drawn carriage. It’ll only take you about 20 minutes to drive to the coast for some beachy fun: head to Eastbourne for a classic British seaside resort beach, or make tracks for Pevensey Bay to find something a bit wilder. If you’d like to get on the water, a watersports centre in Eastbourne can sort windsurfing, sailing or paddleboarding from the beach.
