  • Glamping in the grounds of a 14th-century stately home
  • Shepherd's huts with ensuite bathrooms, heating and proper beds
  • Heritage café with ice cream and waffles; large playground on site
Smart shepherd’s huts in the grounds of a stately home – how splendid. If you’ve ever fancied having the run of a huge country estate, take a look at these posh pads in a peaceful corner of the gardens at Samlesbury Hall, a gorgeous half-timbered medieval hall in the Lancashire countryside halfway between Preston and Blackburn. As befits such stately surrounds, these handcrafted huts have all mod cons for a comfy stay: memory foam mattresses on the beds, a kettle for morning cuppas, and low-wattage plug sockets and USB ports to keep gadgets charged. The huts are heated to keep you cosy on chilly nights, and there are lanterns and a firepit for alfresco eves. Each hut also has an ensuite bathroom with a hot shower and towels provided. You’ll pretty much have the run of the grounds here, so there’s plenty of space for the kids to roam about and play games; there’s also an excellent Mayflower-themed wooden playground at their disposal. The heritage café serves up top-notch breakfasts and daytime meals, and there are sweet treats galore to be had at Dottie’s Wafflery. Smores kits, disposable barbecues and logs are all also available at reception when it is open. When you fancy heading out, it’s 15 minutes or so to drive to Preston or Blackburn, or you can wait at the bus stop outside the site and wait to be whisked into town.

Disliked: The route to and from car while being 1 adult with 3 kids (& dog) as parking not as close as I expected it to be.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: Me and my son had a great time staying in a Shepherd Hut. Played games and roasted marshmallows on the fire. The hut was super warm...even with frost on the ground in the morning. Popped to the heritage cafe for breakfast...as well as a couple of games of crazy golf before leaving. Would definitely recommend.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: The shepherds hamlet is an amazing experience. We got married there 5 years ago and always want to return on our Anniversary or any other occasion. The information file in the huts is brilliant, it has suggestions of walks, restaurants & anything else you might need or want. The hut are so cozy too. The staff are very helpful and the food is very good if you choose to eat at the cafe. The experience allows you the opportunity to get back to nature which is proven for positive well being. I thoroughly recommend a visit 👍🏻☺️

Shepherd's hut

Liked: * Accomodation was fantastic. Clean and modern. Bed was comfy and a great size. Shower was amazing! Area around huts so well kept. * The location was great. Stayed for 2 nights and didn't go anywhere offsite (except hubby to get a takeaway one night!) Children's play area was fantastic. Heritage cafe was beautiful inside. Hall was great to look around. Wafflery was fabulous please visit! My 2 young children absolutely loved it, we will be staying again fir sure.

Disliked: * Not a dislike as such but huts are close together,if someone is staying opposite you I don't think it would feel as private (they were empty when we stayed luckily) but it wouldn't put me off staying, just maybe feel a bit awkward!

Shepherd's hut

Liked: Loved the cute little huts. The setup is great. Shower and toilet so good to have. The kids loved the bunk beds. So quiet and the lights made it look and feel relaxing.

Disliked: Not a lot to do in The rain. Especially with a little one lol

Shepherd's hut

Liked: We absolutely loved our stay from start to finish. On arrival we met a lovely lady on reception who was happy for us to check in early, which really helped with the 5 children we had between my friend and I. We planned on eating out for dinner and the lovely lady recommended various places to eat in the area and highlighted which ones were good for children. We loved the hut and surrounding areas and are already planning our next visit.

Local attractions

The obvious place to start is right on site: the hall and grounds are open most of the week for poking around in (although do check for weddings or other functions taking place before you wander in). Free tours can be had on Sundays, to learn about the hall’s history, its witching links and some of its ghostly goings on. Clitheroe (20 minutes' drive), a market town with a castle, makes a great day out too, while it's roughly three quarters of an hour to Skipton in the Yorkshire Dales or to the southern Lakes. Should the nippers be tiring of cultural pursuits, Preston is 15 minutes away for shopping and various entertainments, or you can get to Blackpool’s beach in around half an hour. If you’d rather take in a bit more nature, plenty of walking trails are three miles away at Brockholes nature reserve, which is also a starting point for the 21-mile Preston Guild Wheel cycle route.
