General

  • Peaceful, clean and friendly park among stunning countryside views
  • Pubs within walking distance; Manchester and Leeds within 45 minutes
  • A few hundred metres from the Pennine Way; five miles from Saddleworth

Settle down for spectacular Pennine views at Moorlands Caravan Park, a friendly and family-owned site on the edge of the Lancashire village of Denshaw.

There are fab vistas of the surrounding countryside and the nearby reservoir from this popular and well-maintained park (see pics), and although it's peacefully rural there's easy access to city sightseeing and shopping: Liverpool, Manchester, Bradford, Leeds, York and Blackpool are all within an hour and a half's drive. Closer to home, the events and shops of lively Saddeworth are five miles away, pubs are within walking distance and the famed Pennine Way is a few hundred metres from Moorlands on its 267-mile run from Edale to the Scottish Borders.

Moorlands is run by Sue and Steve, who make it their mission to ensure that guests have such a splendid stay that they return year after year. The excellent amenities include spotless showers and toilets, a launderette, a washing-up area and a parent and baby washroom; there's also access to fresh water and a chemical disposal area.

The closest pub serving food is just down the road in Denshaw; a supermarket is 10 minutes' drive away in Oldham.

Clean, warm pods with great views.02/24/2020

Our visit coincided with Storm Dennis and despite been on top of Saddleworth the hut was cosy and sturdy in the conditions. Check-in was straight fwd and we bought a fire pack which I thought was excellent value. The pack contained a bag of logs, kindling, fire blocks and a box of matches. The toilet and show block was clean and warm. It is situated some distance from the pods so might not be ideal for some.
The remote location with dark skies at night and panoramic views during the day make it a really tranquil spot to get away from it all and just relax.

We love this site. The facilities are always clean and well maintained.
We love that there are miles and miles of walking routes you can try (and quite often get lost) very close by. They are a short drive away or you can just walk off the campsite. The owners are lovely, friendly and helpful.
A short walk down the hill leads you to a super dog-friendly pub (The Junction) that does lovely meals.
Every time we have been, the site is peaceful with amazing views although, as it is at the top of the hill and very open, it can get a bit windy. The pitches are generous with parking and have their own water supply.

Local attractions

There’s scenic walking, mountain biking and horse riding along the Pennine Bridleway, which passes through the park, or you can strap on your boots to ramble along a section of the parallel Pennine Way. This spectacular route runs from Edale in the northern Peak District to the village of Kirk Yetholm just over the Scottish border, via the lush landscapes (and often tough hiking conditions) of the Yorkshire Dales and the Northumberland National Park.

This is top terrain for city day trips too: Manchester and Leeds are a 45-minute drive from your peaceful countryside base, Bradford 40 minutes and Liverpool and York within an hour and 20 minutes. A stick (or more) of rock as well as heady rollercoaster rides are an hour and five minutes away at Blackpool.

More hiking, biking and horse riding can be had around the Peak District, accessible 55 minutes away, and the Lake District within an hour and 25 minutes. Or stay close to base for the many events of local town Saddleworth: depending on when you're here, you could find yourself taking in the duck races, vintage cars and craft fair at the summer show, on a charity beer walk, humming along with a brass band, celebrating Yorkshire Day, taking part in a wartime reenactment, watching the Saddleworth Morris Men’s famous Rushcart procession, or sampling the region’s finest at a beer festival.

Must see

  • Manchester City Experience (16.7 kilometers)
  • Eureka! The National Children's Museum (17.9 kilometers)
  • Manchester Art Gallery (19.1 kilometers)

National Trust

  • Marsden Moor Estate (7.0 kilometers)
