General

  • Peaceful, dog-friendly site within the North York Moors National Park
  • Five minutes’ drive from Whitby's seaside, abbey and museums
  • Dedicated play area for dogs; barbecues permitted; cycle hire nearby

Pitch up in the North York Moors National Park at Long Meadow Farm and the pretty views will have you itching to get out for explores of both coast and countryside.

There are plenty of walks in the surrounds for all abilities at this family- and dog-friendly site, five minutes’ drive from the sea at Whitby, with wildlife to keep an eye out for as you amble. If you prefer to trundle on wheels, cycle hire is available over the road from Long Meadow.

After a day well spent navigating the local area, head back to the park for some refuelling – there’s a supermarket in Whitby for supplies and barbecues are permitted on site, so grab anything that can be grilled and get ready to tuck in.

If your roams have you tired out and you’re not up to cooking, a couple of pubs serving meals are within walking distance, so you can stop in for a quick refreshment before hitting the hay.

Brought the dog along on your break? A dedicated space is reserved on site for four-legged friends to blow off steam.

Very expensive for a muddy patch to get stuck on with electric hook up10/28/2020

Communication via telephone was good but incorrect information given

    Disliked:

Pitches were mostly mud. Even the 4x4 at the side of us got stuck. We was given the wrong pitch as we booked hard standing and sent to a grass pitch. Too late to move after getting stuck. Road noise from the road into Whitby and someone with possibly a petrol hedge cutter or grass cutter started at 7am. I spoke to the owners regarding my pitch and getting stuck the following morning for 90 mins just said well the hard standing and grass pitches are the same price anyway. Sorry to say the worst site i have stopped at and at £26.00 very expensive for a muddy patch with electric.

From the manager...

The field is currently in a bad state and we are undertaking significant works in November to address this. This limits the number of caravans and motorhomes we can accommodate and your pitch was not meant to be in use.

When you called to check-in you unhelpfully said you had an 'electric pitch' and I understand this is what caused the confusion. Knowing you'd booked hardstanding, most sensible people would have seen this empty and called again to make sure.

Instead, you decided to drive onto the main site and park up in a pitch that was very clearly not suitable for your vehicle. Why you did this I have no idea.

If you had called again in the morning we'd have been there within minutes and could have towed you out immediately, we'd even have been able to tow you out on the night to allow you to go and park on the hardstanding if you'd have told us you were stuck.

Very well located and easy to find. We stayed with a campervan on a hard standing pitch. Glad we did this as saw another camper struggle badly to get out of the grass one in the morning. facilities limited due to covid situation so no toilet or shower but we did use electric hook up. it was very easy to communicate via phone to the manager - Katie even though we arrived after 8pm she guided us to our plot - pitch one and we paid via bank transfer easily. It is near a road as mentioned on other reviews however this did not bother us as I was already equipped with ear plugs and the road noise did not bother my snoring partner either. Another plus - water and waste point very close on other side of hedge :-)

Motorhome stay. Only a few pitches around 8 in total. Quiet village setting. Very helpful family owners. Electric hookups. Dogs allowed. Near to Whitby Abbey & town. (Facilities closed due to Covid but had own facilities so not a problem). Got stuck in the mud on grass pitch in torrential rain & owners came within 5 minutes & towed us out and helped get us onto their hard standing hook up pitch.

    Disliked:

Grass pitches difficult in rain to pitch up in vehicle (but it was October& torrential rain). Lack of lighting could be a problem for some, difficult to see to reverse & park up but family owners helped tow & pull us out & guided into other pitch in pitch black on night of arrival, as late arrival 7.30pm (again used torches to walk out later so was fine).

It was too far away from supermarket and town not as stated

From the manager...

I'm not quite sure what you read, but PitchUp makes very clear that Whitby is a five minute drive away.

Most of our guests visit to enjoy the North York Moors National Park, therefore we prefer not to have a large supermarket right next door and nowhere do we claim this is the case.

Maybe next time see if you can pitch up in a supermarket car park? Would seem more suitable for your needs.

Local attractions

If you don’t spot any animals scampering about the North York Moors while staying at this site, set off to the SEA LIFE Scarborough aquarium and eye up some underwater creatures instead. The town also has a castle to check out, along with a sandy beach (half an hour's drive).

Stretches of coast closer by include Robin Hood's Bay (five minutes), which is also home to a fab old fishing village, and strolls along the seaside at Whitby’s harbour are also a satisfying way to while away your time. Head to this town – said to be the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s spooky novel Dracula – to have a gander at the atmospheric abbey as well.

If you’re keen on seeing the scenery of the nearby national park but not on two feet, make tracks to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, which leaves from Whitby and chugs along for 18 miles with views of Newtondale’s geological formations and Fen Bog’s nature reserve.

Kids can’t keep still? Tire them out at Go Ape Dalby (35 minutes), a treetop adventure park with all sorts of activities available, or take them to Alpamare waterpark (25 minutes) to whoosh down the slides and float in the pools.
